Crunching Into Gears

Recommended Posts

bensonmi

right, when the cars not running it selects all gears perfectly, but with the engine running, it just grinds and the car creeps forward with out the gear being fully selected, and whilst the clutch is still depressed.

the linkages seem ok,im guessing its the clutch,iv tried adjusting the cable to different lengths and seems to make no difference.

i hope its not a gear box off job as im itching to take it for a spin today!

is it likely the clutch plate has got stuck as its not been run for over a year,or the release bearing not in correctly?

any help will be much appreciated.

its a be3 box fitted in mi16,the car was orriginally be1

The clutch is dragging then. I believe a common fix is to get a new one on cars i've heard this happens on.

It sounds like a clutch problem to me. Either a worn clutch, incorrectly adjusted clutch or a broken friction plate, I had the same symptoms and it turned out to be a broken spring in the friction plate.

iv tried it with the clutch pedal at brake level, about 2 inches higher and about an inch lower than the brake pedal, nothing seems to make a difference :(

I guess your getting the different heights by slackening the cable? if this is the case it needs to be as high as it will go. i.e. no slack, maybe even tighten it up a bit more so its very slightly engaged and see if that makes a difference.

Keep shortening the cable until you get the biting point up from the floor, the clutch is not disengaging properly and this is why you are crunching gears, if no amount of adjustment will cure it either your cable has stretched, or your release brg is collapsing.

In my experiance adjusting the cable wont make that much difference.

The springs in my friction plate broke and although i could select most gears and drive the car i'd have trouble pulling from junctions and when approaching junctions down shifting i would just loose drive.

My advice is change the clutch :(

iv adjusted the cable fully tight now and had it as loose as possible, nothing makes a difference. the clutch cable is brand new also. i think the gear box will have to come off for a check, maybe the release bearing became dislodged when i fitted the box.

cheers for all the replys so far :(

What release bearing are you using?, When adjusting the cable you want at least 2mm of free play

Oh and another, thing stay very far away from cheap clutches. I paid about £50 for one thinking it'll be ok and the release bearing exploded and buggered up the rest of the clutch within 500 miles. An extra £100 is worth it to avoid having to remove the gearbox again!

Used to get Valeo OEM clutch kits for way under £100 from local motor factors, even came with alignment tool.

Personally I'd say stay away from massively overpriced non-OEM spec clutch kits on ebay.

I am sure that Pug used to use Valeo for their clutches. I didn't mean to sound like I was having a go above, but when an OEM spec clutch can do 100k miles and costs around £60-£70, if you buy from the right places, cannot see how recommending a supposeadly uprated clutch for twice the price is good advice.

Or maybe I just get upset when people put "lol" at the end of a sentence for absolutely no reason whatsoever. Bet a score that person isn't laughing when they type it, and you can be sure that whoever is reading it isn't either.

Valeo or LUK are fine, anything else is iffy and the uprated one's other than top brands again I would avoid as you never know where they come from,

Hang on hang on,

check all your bolts are done up on the gear box, and none have worked themselves loose.

then think about doing the clutch.

I've been caught out by this 3 times!!!!

iv got the box of and the release bearing has cracked and comes loose from the clutch lever. the clutch and pressure plate look good with plenty of life left in.

would i be alright just getting a release bearing or should i buy the whole clutch kit? the best price i can get locally is £90 for the kit ?(bx16v). i dont really want to spend that much unless really necasary.any one know wheres cheapest for a valeo kit? or where and how much the bearing would be individually? want to get the bits for the weekend.

after folling this thread for a few days (unable to give advice due to noobness) i've developed exactly the same symptoms just on my Rovay (shhhhh) so investigations will commence into it. i shall keep you posted weather mine was release bearing also.

secondly, isnt it very unlikley to be the friction plate itselsf as the car creeps forwards with gear selected therefore meaning its engaged, where as with a worn plate the car would not be doing this but be slipping like hell on pull away etc?

Cheers

Tim
