Throttle Bodies And Turbo

Recommended Posts

Rob Turbo

At present I'm going to be buidling/modifying an inlet manifold for my 16v turbo project because of what I have laying around so it wouldn't be much more effort for me to go for say R1 throttle bodies, but would there be any real advantage on a turbo setup? Afterall the inlet air will be going through a hole the size of a regular throttle body (2.5"), so the only real difference would be more moving parts as far as I can see, am I missing something or should I just go for a single throttle body?

It's possible but i'm unsure whether the bodies would be able to take the boost pressure. I've heard of spindles being swallowed by a boosted engine.

In a word no - not really any benefit on FI engines (arguebley yes there are eg Pulsar, but not much in it esp for the cost effort, single TB is the way to go.)

That's what I thought really, single TB it is!

Really? How flimsy were the throttles? Surely any normal spindles would be able to withstand even a massively boosted engine?

there was an article in performance gti a few years ago, a group thash iirc. there was a gti on bodies, with a turbo that was running silly amounts of power. was one of the quickest cars of the day. i cant see them being a problem myself. dcoes can accept boost if there built with the right gaskets, so i cant see why a pair of properly built bodies shouldnt be able to with stand it.

the only problem i forsee is getting a proper plenum made up, so each runner gets the same amount of boost. you ideally want the air inlet in the middle of the bodies, not at the ends, which could cause some space issues in a 205.

i dont think you would benefit from more power but smaller throttlebodies will give better throttle response.

They seem to work quite well on Nissan R32/33 etc. Skylines! The TB's are right next to the head. Same as what Batfink said.

and a lot of the boosted e30 boys use them. As ever i guess it just comes down to how much money you fancy throwing at the project!

we've built a supercharged duratec on throttle bodies and a custom plenum. Went quite well. I'll try to get pictures, it's on display at the stoneleigh kitcar show this weekend. This is the single throttle incarnation we developed first
