Rotor Arm Bolts Sheared

Recommended Posts

Guest MickJ

I was driving home up the A1 last Friday in the 205 Mi16 when a loud crack noise followed by a loss of power. Turns out that 2 of the 3 small bolts securing the rotor arm to the camshaft had broken. The remaining bolt held, but the rotor arm broke off and smashed though the dizzy.

I’ve got the new replacement rotor arm and dizzy, but am not sure how to remove the ends of the bolts from the cam?

Has anyone ever had this problem before? Any suggestions on how I can remedy?

this an Mi? I had to drill mine out carefully as they had been snapped off by a previous owner at some point and then run a tap though them

Yes it's an Mi16. I thought that would be the only option, other than replacement cam.

Do you know if the end of the cam removable as it looks like it is fastened somehow? There’s not a lot of room to manoeuvre in there so I’m not feeling to confident on this one!

I 'think' you're right. From memory it's a 3 sided thing, held on the end of the cam with a centre bolt. Once you get the bolt out you'd need to be careful to get the little adaptor (call it what you like) off. Mine was tight. I'd use a small hammer and a brass drift, give it a few taps, rotate the cam a little (stick the car in gear and roll it) and tap again. Hit it too hard and you'll bend it for sure. Doubt you bend the cam but you could damage something, which is then a whold load of grief.. . . .

Getting nowhere fast on removing the end part of the cam, so onto plan B. I've started drilling out the bolts but am a total rookie to this process. Do I need a reamer and then re-tap the holes? What size tap is required?

Ask tom fenton, he should know, hope that helps. :(

I think they're M4 (so you'd use a 3.5mm drill - I think!). I drilled mine very carefully stright through the middle of the sheared bolts, use a centre punch to locate the drill. Unfortunately it's something that comes with practice. It's much easier with the little bugger off for sure

I think you're right on the size, and definitely right on the coming with practice side!

Managed to get one out with little drama but has took about an hour. Quick break for a cuppa, then attempt bolt number 2!
