Neither my Roland Garros or the XS I broke had centre boxes, however the XS had a bigger back box on it so it wasn't any louder than standard! Weird ehh.

Yes you can, i did this on my old XS back in the day, sounded good with a Px filter!

Yes you can, I did it to mine as the straight through centre section was £12 and a new centre box was £60!! I was told I would lose some mid-range torque, something to do with the lower back pressure, definitely adds a bit of a burble to the exhaust note! I didn't really notice any loss of torque personally!

Edit: spelling! :)

Sorry to thread Jack slightly but...

As far as I can tell, but XS has a standard system hooked up to a 4 - 2 - 1 manifold which does the job nicely, but the barry in me would like it to sound a bit more raspy when the needle climbs to the higher reaches of the Tacho. I don't want to lose any power, and likewise, I don't want something that is stupidly loud when pottering around town (I'd rather not draw attention to myself!).

Can anyone suggest something, or should I stay standard?

The standard XS doesn't have a 4-2-1........ it has pretty much the same manifold I've seen on every TU, connected to a (fairly big) downpipe.

they DO have something along those lines, just not a tubular steel effect, its along the same lines as the GTI's XU cast iron 4 -2 manifold and 2 part downpipe with the splitter, more commonly on the TU a separate twin pipe.

All the TU3S engines I've seen have had an ordinary cast manifold with a single down pipe :P

Sure I've seen it on a 205, I don't know which the TU3S is though.

XS engine :P I'm pretty sure all the TU3 manifolds are the same, i've got 205 XS, AX GT and 106 XSI ones in my garage and they're all identical.

Sorry, I meant my car has a aftermarket 4 - 2 - 1 jobbie. Silly grammar/typo

apparently using the 1.1 pipe, makes your car slightly less responsive and looses you a bit of power... sound louder though, depends if you care about power figures or not?

I can partly agree with you there, both these and the XU has got a pretty well designed manifold that separates cylinders 1+4 from 2+3 inside the manifold, which is good. I´ve even looked into prolonging this "split-wall" down into the downpipe to create somewhat of a 4-2-1 design on a budget, but i haven´t concluded if that is worth the try yet :)
