Do Mi16 Ptfe Inlet Manifold Gaskets Need Sealant?

Recommended Posts

SweetBadger

Finally got the MI back on the road after a full top en rebuild and the idle is playing up intermittently - Staying between 1500 - 2000 rpm when coming off throttle.

My primary suspect is the TPS as blipping the throttle a couple of times usually brings the idle back down to normal, however before the rebuild it was working fine for 20k+ miles without showing these symptoms. Seems strange for it to break just sitting on the garage floor...

The only change I made when putting it back together was to fit PTFE inlet manifolds as I was so pissed off with replacing them every time I inevitably had to pull the inlet manifold back off... The gaskets are only 0.5mm thick and don't look like they compress much so could it be an air leak at the inlet manifold? Should I have used some sealant with the gaskets?

no they don't need sealant, I have a 5mm thick one on my gti6 engine without any issues at all, I guess yours is a 1.9 Mi?

Ok thanks, that's good to know, it's an MI, but the gaskets I'm using are really thin - approx 0.5mm.

Looks like I'll have to get the multimeter out over the weekend, bloody thing!
