Mi16 Conversion Gearbox

Recommended Posts

dino20vt

Right, ive got a mi16 engine with an early mi16 gearbox i think as its a lift up next to first reverse. The 205 its going in has the newer gearbox set up with reverse below 5th.

My question is do i need to swap the pedals and rod mechanisms to the early set up?

no, all Mi16 boxes use what's usually called the BE 3 clutch arm, so you can use your original cable.

you'll need the gearstick, knob and cable for the lift up reverse bit, you dont HAVE to have them, but it makes it nicer.

Hmmm, that all makes sense, just a bit of background, ive got an mi16 powered 205 with an mi16 gearbox with reverse next to to first. The engine and gearbox are destined for another 205 with the later configuration.

Am i right in thinking an mi16 gearbox like the 1.6 and 1.9 first had reverse next to 1st then later had reverse below fifth?

But irrespective of early or late version, it always came with a late cluth arm?

Are the arms easy to swap?

I always get confused with the box types  But afaik, the Mi had the same arm through out.

The arms not too bad to change out of the car, never tried it in. Theres a pin in the top of the arm, which has to be knocked out, its pretty tight against the case iirc. Once out, the arm comes of the shaft.

Do be1 and be3 gearboxs in 205s have not only different clutch arms but different clutch pedals?

be3 and be1 use different clips on the pedal end of the cable. this in turn means slight differences in the end of the pedal. BE1 AFAIK doesnt use a hook, where as a BE3 does.

Not always it goes like this (Fact)

All BE1 box's bar 16v (Maybe TD but I don;t touch derv's) use the circliped clutch cable and quadrant bolted onto the box

BE1 16v Uses the same cable as all late BE3 205's along with the clutch shaft/Fork with the arm on top, makes for a nice clutch operation over the Early BE1 Quadrant type

BE3, All types use the 205 BE3 cable.

Miles, with all the info you have supplied, you may as well have done the conversion for me!

So what we're saying is my car with a BE3 clutch cable will fit a MI16 BE1 clutch as both cars (205/BX)left the factory with the same cable.

What about gear sticks and linkages? Should I take the set up from the doner car and replace my BE3 configuration?

Yes you only need the BE1 Gearstick and cable, Linkages are the same but might needs adjusting thru 90 degrees
