Help, Webers On A 1.9

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

I have recently fitted some 45 Weber Carbs to my 1.9 GTi. Initially, the car was running superbly on them, they are just one year old, great condition and i bought them off someone who had them rolling roaded to a 1.9 engine. There was always abit of a lag in low revs, but after 2700 rpm ish then it picked up beautifully.

After attending the PSOOC Spring meet at Llandow and having a great day there, the car has got noticeably worse running.Aside from a strange knocking which turned out to be a completely buggered alternator, and a small oil leak from a seal in where the distributor connects to the head, the cars running has deteriated big time and if left idling just wants to stall eventually, even when warm. Previous to fitting them, i had the car MOT'd and the AFM was really out, so was running on two cylinders pretty much, and that is almost what it feels like now. When you try to accelerate, the car just wont, and if anything it slows down and completely bogs down when you press the accelerator. Its very hard to drive and nothing like what it was like when i first fitted them.

I have checked the plugs to see if thats the problem, but they are only 2 months old and look absolutely fine, so im in need of some thoughts and opinions on the matter. Maybe they just need setting up again, maybe its something else?? I dont know!!

If anyone can help me with this i will be really grateful. I have a track day at Castle Combe saturday, so really want to try and sort the problem for then. I could take my 206 180 on track, but that defeats the object of having the 205!!

help please guys

Many thanks

Phil

when you fitted them did you set them up yourself or have them done by a 'proper' place? They could have gone out of tune so may just need a basic tune up, or maybe one of the small petrol filters is blocked and preventing a decent fuel flow on one carb.

Mine need a basic check and tune now after 6mths worth of use (well 4 track days) so hopefully with yours thats all that will be needed.

When me and Daza4 fitted them i did no tuning/setting up myself or at a proper place, as the person i bought them off was running them on a 1.9 GTi engine beforehand and had had them setup on a rolling road.Even quoted me bhp figures that the car was pushing out once tuned. I guess there will be some difference between engines, but just seemed strange that they ran so well for a few weeks and since Llandow have got worse.

Petrol filter idea could be an option, cheers for that. Basic setup might well be in order i think, that way i know that shes setup properly for my engine and running as well as possible.

Oh no, I was looking forward to seein you in the 205 on saturday!

As your jetting was obviously correct (or near enough) before hand it must be something has moved/come loose/block as said above.

Might be worth whipping the pump jets out and cleaning them, actually may as well take the mains out as well. Blow them through with a footpump or airline make sure they arent blocked.

Failing that I would take the cover off (ign and pump off obviously) and check the fuel levels in the bowl, maybe a needle valve has stuck shut or something.

it does sound like something along those lines, at least the webers are easy to do bits to insitu without the need to remove from the engine.

When I bought mine I did a full overhaul/service on them and when I removed the filters they were completely shagged. Hope it all works out ok.

Just thought, might be worth looking down the throat and making sure an Aux venturi hasnt somehow spun blocking the main supply of fuel. Should be impossible but its soo easy to check you may as well.

Are they held in via the screws/fixings on the body side? And these are normally wired locked into place to prevent them vibrating off. If so then that could be a possibility if one of these fixings has come loose or fallen off?

On 40's there is no screw, 45's have them but I cant remember if they are on the Aux or the chokes. They should have a little pip in a groove to stop them spinning but I know one of mine is dodgy so I thought it might be possible. Would certainly knacker the fueling :)

Rear brakes locked I believe! New wing and some lights but not that much damage to the car luckily! (or so it seemed)

Hope you get it sorted soon phil!
