Is There A Chance Ive Damaged My Gti6 Engine ?

Recommended Posts

Yesterday i was bolting up the large engine mount to the left side of the block (that the alternator bolts onto) , I attempted to insert bolts what were to long and did them up until it was physically not possible to turn them anymore. After realising my mistake i swapped them for the correct bolts. My question is , is there any chance ive damanged the block in anyway, i looked at the bolts after i removed them the the bottom thread had been stripped. (bolts are shown in picture supplied)

what can happen is a build up of hydrolic pressure behind the bolt, which could in turn cause the block to have a hairline fracture. strip the mount down and clean off the block, spend a good 15-20 mins cleaning out the threads and look for any signs of weakness and cracks in threaded part of the block.

use que tips to get all the way in!

yea, ive already cleaned all the threads out etc, cant see any cracks etc, the bolts are a good 2+ inch so not really possible to see down the hole at all. there wasnt any crap really that came out, other than a bit of copper grease which i put dwn the hole before bolting the mount on.

Hi mate, how deep are the holes? It may be the case that the holes can take bolts that long anyway. If the holes just 'stopped' you would not have been able to tighten them all the way in. Stick something down the holes all the way and measure how deep they are and compare to your bolts. Just an idea.

well really roughly i would say the holes are about 2.5 inch and i attempted to put a 3 inch bolt in , which obviously stopped around .5 inch short.

You could try some crack detection spray. You can get it from welding supply shops.
