Mi16 Intermittent Cutting Out On Idle.

Recommended Posts

Have a rather annoying problem with my MI which i still cant get to the bottom of after a week of tinkering. It will intermitently cut out on idle, but only when warm. When it cuts out the engine coughs and dipping the clutch and hitting the throttle has no effect, it will just die. Once it cuts out it is also a bitch to restart, and will just keep cranking on the starter - altho tries to cough into life when the starter is released. If you leave it for a minute or so it will restart fine

When driving it pulls hard, revs to red line doesnt stutter under load etc, drives perfectly normally.

My brother followed me home today and i was heel and toeing to keep the revs up at junctions, it tried to die on two occasions and both times backfired (with flames) So sounds like an ignition problem?

Ive tried, (all known good parts) - Idle control valve and ignition amp. The dizzy cap and arm are new. The ECU temp sender is a month old. Throttle switch is properly set and reads infinity where it should do.

Im thinking AFM but why does it idle perfectly when cold?

If anyone has any thoughts before i splash out on a perhaps un neeeded AFM itd be much appreciated.

Thanks

Matt

Just to note, could it be s*ite petrol? It only started after buying £20 worth of optimax at the motorway services? Smells rich at the back but plugs are nicely golden brown and the CO is where it should be on the gas sniffer!!

I have a similar problem. it's only done it once up to now but was doing it today, almost full tank. I have twin ign amps fitted and have tried three bosch ones in the car. Seems to be when it gets a little warm. Oil and water temps perfectly normal but as i had been going slower, maybe 30-40 for a few miles it started playing up. I have no idea. Just starts to die and miss like it's not getting fuel and then just picks up again. I might run an ammeter inline with the pump to see if it's the pump playing up
