Sad Plug

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I just changed my engine wiring harness, the one from ecu. After the job the SAD stops working:(. but the car goes better ;) I guess we mixed the SAD and CTS plugs. I changed them but nothing happens. SAD does not working.

I will check the ecu pins for CTS then I will configure out the SAD plug. But I would like to ask you too if anybody has any idea what is this blue plug for? SAD of CTS. (I pluged it to CTS previously)

There is another issue, just a silly question maybe. Before the new harness when I turn the ingition key to second pos there was no sound coming from the fuel pump. But know with the new harness when I turn the key I start to hear a hisling noise from the fuel pump in the back. Is this normal ???

Thanksssss

Blue is the ECU coolant temp sensor (CTS as you put it ;) )

A working SAD is great, but if you are willing to set your idle a little high you don't really need one.

Yes it is normal to hear the fuel pump hissing

Great the blue plug for CTS.

As I discovered there is no electric coming to the SAD. It is difficult when the engine is cold. Also the engine revs vary between long stops. ;)

I checked all the wiring from ecu to CTS and SAD and AFM all is ok and voltage is ok for SAD and CTS. I also checked the components resistances according to haynes, but I still have a cold start problem. I will chance my SAD but I would like to hear your comments before.

I changed my engine wiring harness and before that, sad was working fine. We found a stange voltage cable coming from the sad and removed it. After we chanced the harness the sad stoped working somehow.

When I start the engine cold it stalls if I dont help to rev. After 3 to 5 minutes engine starts to idle at 1500rpm and I understand that the sad is working. After 15 minutes sad stops working. It takes to loong to stop working.

What I dont understand it was working before, but with the new all working and checked harness sad is not working.

SAD is going to chance but any ideas, experiences???

What car did the new wiring loom come from? Some other similar cars don't have a SAD but have some other cold start device iirc so the wrong charge may be being sent to the SAD

It may be worth cleaning out the SAD with WD40 or carb cleaner as they get full of gunk.

iirc it should take 15 minutes for the SAD to close; it closes by means of a coil of metal which expands when it gets hot and shuts the valve, the coil needs electrical charge AND hot coolant in the exchange above it to shut fully. Try squeezing the SAD pipe at various times to see what the effect on the idle is, this will tell you how well it is working, if at all.

The wiring came from phase two 1.9 gti same as mine.

I checked the SAD plug pins and both of them get 12 V at start

I thought I can clean the SAD, but you mean inside the SAD? Should I spray wd40 inside the SAD?

When it starts it takes aprx 15 mins for SAD to stop working, I tried to squeeze the hose but it is so hard that I can not squeeze it

the actual problem it stalls at first start. If I help the engine to rev for one min then SAD handles the rest.

I am so confused, I try to clean it asap.

Yes inside the SAD, it gets all oily.

A lot of GTis need a little throttle for 30 seconds or so, in fact mine does, I'm not sure what causes it :)

You can adjust the bimetallic disc gap (which is inside the SAD) by undoing 7mm screw on the front side of the SAD body and moving it left or right :) if you set the gap wider (by moving the screw to the left) it'll supply more air on the start up (cold start) and a little bit higher revs , on the other hand if you set it narrower (screw to the right side) it'll be , of course , the other way around - less air on the start up and lower revs ..

Sounds great :) Do you have a picture for it?

Today we dismantled the SAD and I try to tune the small nut but it did not changed anything. Then We gave 12 V to SAD and the gap inside completely closed. so the SAD is OK but on the car it was not functioning. The wiring harness is new so it is OK too, so what is left?

We check the voltages on the sad plug. One is 12 V and the other is 12 V on start up then nothing. I think there is a problem on the ECU on that pin. I put the minus to that plug then my pug said it is OK.

After that stop screw adjustment, TPS and idle speed adjustment and last co is 1% adjustment. Now cold start problem is gone and it flys on the road :D

I had similar problem before with duff SAD connector wiring :D , there wasn't 12V supply on the connector terminals with the engine running so when the coolant temp. dropped down a bit to the 80/75C mark ,during the long driving in high gear on a flat road, the SAD opened again and started pushing the idle all the way up to the 2000rmp :P so i discharged the OE wiring and re-wired the connector in a circuit which had constant 12V with the engine started up and since then "shotgun idle" was sorted :D
