Fuel Consumption

Recommended Posts

Alteran

Hello everyone,

As per title really.. Driving my 1.6 normally my last tank of fuel I worked out I achieved 38.5mpg. I think this is great! I've only been driving this for a few weeks and this was my first tankful. I expected around 34mpg so i'm well chuffed. However the car does have a turbo diesel gearbox installed.

Would just like some comparisons from other drivers. If you 1.6 drivers out there are getting roughly the same then I might think about putting the 1.6 gearbox back in. TD gearbox is a bit loooooong!!

Thanks in advance,

Liam.

Depends on how/where you drive it, I've seen nearly 40mpg from my standard 1600 on a long steady run on the French autoroute.

I get about 40mpg when driven economically in my 1.6 with 1.6 box. it returns about 30 when driven enthusiastically. On the other hand my other 1.6 (when it was a 1.6) returned about 20mpg when driven carefully and about 15mpg when driven hard :D

Not had a 1.6 on a long run but I think I got about 450 miles on a tank on my 1.9 in France with the 1.9 box

If you forget to plug in the cam sensor on a gti6 engine you can get 4 mpg with some spirited driving! ;)

When I remember to plug it in, I get 35+, 2.0 16v on a 1.6 be3 box.

1.9 Mi16 on 2 row management with a 4.44 CWP sitting on the motorway running to work I'm getting 35-36mpg at around 65mph. That's on unleaded. I've put some Tesco Super stuff in yesterday so will be interesting to see if it's any better on this tank. Not bad tho.

Interestingly when I put the 4.44 in the 309 1900 I had (previously 1900 box) the fuel consumption was only about 1-2mpg difference, despite revving it's nuts off with the lower final drive

I'm getting 32mpg+ (2.2 16v - usually spirited).

And I'm sorry, but does anyone use the search function anymore? This was all talked about quite recently; so now we have at least 2 threads on the same subject. ;)

I'm only getting about 400 miles from the 70 litre fuel tank on my 405, same as the autocar review of the car. Works out to be something dreadful like 26mpg. I've always found though that driving the car with a heavy right foot doesn't seem to use a hell of a lot more fuel than driving like a granddad. Probably got a few sensors on their way out or something.

For driving around town, I get around 23-26mpg pootling about, less if I drive spirited.

Have seen 42 once on a 400 mile round trip down Hertfordshire @ a constant 60mph.

(88 1.9GTi with a 1.9 box).

In my 205 GTi6 I get around 37mpg on a long run, or about 28-30mpg on lots of short trips.

EDIT: it uses a 1.9 box.

Because people keep replying :rolleyes::)

It'd be a quiet place anyway with reposts as most threads on here are usually repeating something.

My 1989 standard 1.6 CTi has been improving over the years....I must be doing something right. In heavy traffic (stop-start)it can be 25-27mpg. Normal driving I get around 32mpg. Best so far is 36.08 mpg, but long unhindered journeys generally give 34mpg. Strangely despite what the mimsers say, speed seems to make little difference...60 or 90 mph return same consumption. Accept it would go down nearer max revs.
