Common problem is the soldered nipple on the cable to the handle release pulls through.

Or the vacuum hose has fallen off the T-piece.

check that the flap you pull down has two 'fingers'/joints connecting either side.

the misses pulled mine down with out pressing the button and sucessfully snapped one of the 'fingers' the vacuum works, but the roof is locked shut.

may be worth having a look at.

my wipers chewed through the vac pipe that fed the reservoir, and it took quite a while to get itself working again once i'd fitted a new pipe

THe safety wire has probably come loose.

Remove the interior light and it will all become apparent.

I always thought the vacuum system wouldn't work unless the engine was running to create the vacuum?

it stores vacuum, as long as there is vacuum accumulated it'll work fine with the engine off.

You learn something everyday! I take it thats what the black box under the scuttle does, stores the vacuum in there then.

Yup. Obviously there is only a finite amount, so you can't repeatedly open and close the sunroof without the engine running otherwise you'll deplete it.

that's the bugger, and if yours does indeed only work with the engine running there's a leak or a damaged valve, I think there's a one way valve in the pipework somewhere.
