Seperating A Piston And Rod

Recommended Posts

Rob Turbo

I need to take my pistons off the conrods from my 2.0 8v turbo engine so I can get the pistons machined, the pins are pressed into the rod, not just held in with circlips, which would have made things a lot easier!

Question is, how much pressure will it take to get the pin out? Are we talking vice or hydraulic press? I have access to a press, but I have to arrange it around the bloke, who is a hard man to catch (really need my own press!) but don't want to waste my time trying to do it in the vice if it's just not gonna happen!!

Thanks,

Rob

You can press them out,but engine shop told me you can damage pistons doing it if unlucky

They need heating(sweating as they call it)to re-fit them :P

Not sure if I fancy doing this anymore, I kinda need pistons for the engine to run, don't want them breaking

I might see if there's some way of machining them with the rods still on, I can't afford new ones!

Thanks,

Rob

machine / engine building shops should have the correct jigs to hold the pistons and press them out without damaging the skirt / side of the piston.

are the 8v ones heat and press in, or just press in interference fit?
