Differential Differences

What's the difference between the 16x59 ring gear that my 1.9 has and the 17x59 ring gear? I presume the 1.6 has the latter  Also I presume shorter gearboxes generally have fewer teeth on the ring gear?

your 1.9 box should be a 3.69 with the 1.6 a 4.06, so there's something not quite right there with yours being a 17x59 (3.47)! sounds like a 205 diesel box.

shorter final drives can often have more teeth on the crown wheel, but also more on the pinion, the only thing that matters is the actual ratio given, and that the crown wheel and pinion are kept as matched parts.

i.e 14x62 on the Mi f/d, (4.42) 19x75 for the gti6 and some diesels (3.94) 16x59 (3.68) 17x59 (3.47)

many later boxes in the 306 use 19x77 (4.06) and 19x70 (3.68)

(the larger the number, the shorter the final drive)

I'm sure it's a 1.9 box as it did 70mph at around 3.5krpm (or whatever is normal); I've had a 1.9 before and they are both the same, ever so slightly longer than my 1.6.

I will double check the number on the ring gear tonight but I am sure it's 17x59 (I also counted the teeth on the ring gear and there were 59)

No need to count, It's stamped on both the Crown wheel and pinion

Definitely stamped with 16x59 on the big cog (ring gear, part 1 on the pic)

Which others should be stamped?

The larger cog is correctly called the "crownwheel" with its matching smaller cog called the "pinion"
