check compression, take a battery and some starter cables and spin the engine over on the starter off the battery with the spark plugs out and check what compression is like.

I'd also remove the sump and have a look at the state of the bearings as well. I guess it depends on how friendly the person selling it is as to whether they'd let you do it but tbh they should do if they've got nothing to hide

Pretty much, although might need a few easy things swapped over.

Im not sure, but arent the heads different between those models of engine? slightly larger valves on your h reg?

other than that, the only differences i think are the timing belt tensioners.

strugling to find a 1.9 gti engine and so far have sourced one from an e reg. the engine on mine will be out so if i can get an e reg engine and drop it in then that makes my life sooo much easier... what type of things will need to be changed? would it be wiring harness or sensers etc?

thanks so far

No valve differences no, that's very early 1.6's. oAnd a probable no to the tensioner differences either, change on alot later cars.

You might need to swap the inlet manifold for the coil placement, and the temperature sender positions may be different, both dependant on the age of your car though. Retain the complete loom your car has, and if yours is a late H-plate, it'll be3 gearbox (reverse below 5th) then the box will be different as an E-reg will have a Be1.
