Nightmare 205 Mi16 Build Goes Horribly Wrong Once Again

Recommended Posts

If I actually wrote down everything that's happened so far in a list, nobody would believe me. My fully rebuilt (shells, rings, every seal nut and washer) Mi16 just seized. I don't know why. I would check the timing belt tension but I can't get the cover off. I have a feeling the engine I bought, which was taken from a badly crashed 205 Mi16 Dimma, is actually haunted and/or cursed at this point even though nobody died in the crash.

Basically I was having earthing problems, which I solved, and while cold cranking, the starter made a strange noise, and then locked solid. Presuming the starter was f***ed I then replaced it with a high torque diesel starter and it's still locked solid. Putting the car in gear and rocking it over and back, it appears the engine is seized.

Withdrawing the plugs and the plugholes are full of mayo from a cam cover leak, as is the breather. I suspect either the head gasket is leaking badly or, more likely, the liners.

While this thread is mostly looking for words of support, it would be nice to know if:

1. An engine spinning on the starter, the cyls either aqua lock or aqua lock and the t-belt slips, how likely are bent valves?

2. Again, a fifteen stone bloke rocks the car over and back with valves touching pistons, how likely is it that I've collected the valves and bent them?

3. How likely is it that the conrods are bent?

I'm just wondering how much of the engine I can save tbh.

Secondly, that mayo leak, head gasket or bottom of the liners?

take the engine apart, without doing that how could anyone say how many valves are bent or if liner seals are gone

As above, you won't really able to understand much if its internal without taking it apart.

Id rule out anything odd on the starter side first mate, you say the first starter died, it might be something silly like part of the starter pinion has fell out (im guessing.. but dont rule out something being in there) and is jamming the flywheel.

I know how you feel with things like this bud, its hard to keep the faith to keep on plugging on, especially when its a case of two steps forward and 19 back, you often wonder is it worth the heartache..

But.. All is not lost, i doubt that there was sufficient water in the bore for it to hydrolock, and its also unlikely that the belt has slipped and damaged valves.

The mayo thing needs some investigation, but at this point i wouldnt worry. Get it free'd off first.

Whip the plugs out , put the box in neutral and try spinning the engine via crank pulley with the socket/spanner  if theres something broken inside you'll certainly feel this while turning the engine by hand .. if it's just excessive resistance but smooth movement during the spinning fill each cylinder with mixture of WD fluid and oil and leave it for a few hours , afterwards proceed with the spinning until it loosen up a bit ...

If the engine was left for too long with blown head gasket (coolant leak past the gasket fire rings inside the combustion chambers) then the piston rings will deffo stuck/size to the cylinder walls , which will start to rust as well ..

I wouldn't have thought hydraulic lock would make the belt slip, you need to get that cover off and check your belt alignment.

If it is hydraulic lock stopping your engine from turning over the starter hasn't enough power to bend a rod unless it has the inertia of the flywheel behind it. once you have checked the belt alignment, with the plugs out turn the crank (clockwise) with a spanner on the crank bolt, if there is water in the cylinders it will come out the plug holes but the crank should turn if id dosnt it bight be rust stoping it put a bit of oil and wd40 down the plug holes and leave fore a couple of hours and try again. your oil level should have gone up if your liner seals have gone. if you drop the sump fill the coolant up, you should see water dripping out.

If you have compression lock its more likely head gasket as the liner seal is between the water jacket and the crank housing.

Sounds like you have over tightened some bearings.

if i where you mate, remove spark plugs and try cranking it over if water spurts out of plug holes i would say you have a big problem

poss head gasket problem etc.if it still doesnt turn over without plugs i would say either problem with timing belt or as said something

has slipped out and jamming.A mate of mine bought a mi16 205 which the owner thought had seized but turns out it was a clutch cover bolt

came out and jammed the flywheel.

Timing belt has jumped a few teeth. No idea why. Will tear it apart and see what gives :)
