Advice About Mi16

hello

 

i got my 205 gti 1.6 about a year ago. and it has been great it has perfect body work but have always had problems with the engine it has broken down on me 5 times and it dose not sound good. would love to drop a mi16 in but was wondering want place is best to get it done ?? and were can i find a mi16 ??

The change from 1.6 to Mi16 is incredible and well worth it. A complete job, supplying engine, removing your engine and fitting 16v power ready for you to drive is going to cost a bit though, at least a £1,000, probably nearer £2,000.

 

Two people spring to mind near(ish) to you who MAY do it, and do it very well are:

- Dan Taylor (TaylorsPug)

- Miles (Miles)

 

It's really a case of your money, your time, your skills and whether these guys are busy.

 

Worth looking into though as it can be accomplished with the right crowd (and a few bottles of whiskey) in a weekend. :lol:

If you have the time and can have the car off the road for a while it's worth looking into doing it yourself too, it's not that hard :lol:

I wouldn't bother (just yet anyway).

 

Get your engine sorted out. Disk brakes aren't that much better on the rears than drums anyway, and there's hardly much point having a better ability to stop when it seems you're having trouble going.

 

There's plenty of info on here (if you search) about doing the conversion yourself, but it sounds to me you may need some assistance, hence me recommending some people I would trust like Dan and Miles. Really in this case, it's just a question of you having the money and them having the time.

 

However if you find a decent engine and some knowledgable friends, your engine swap could be done quite easily in a week. Forget the brakes; sort your engine requirements out, and you'll learn a lot in the process too.

There is alternative train of thought here.............you could just work out what's wrong with the 1.6 and fix it :lol: 1.6s are great fun. Mi16s can run better and be more economical if everything is tip top, but performance wise, don't assume that more bhp/torque equals more fun. That's how I feel about it anyway.

 

I'd agree that if the 8v is totally gubbed - such as low on compression, worn bearings, smokey head, knackered ignition components or something - then it's worth using it as an excuse to go 16v. But if it's something simple like it occasionally won't start, is a bit lumpy on tickover, and doesn;t sound good due incorrect valve clearance or cracked exhaust manifold etc, then it's a bit dramatic to replace it with an Mi16 over something that could be fixed for a little effort.

MI16s are great!

 

I drove a good 1.6 the other day and thought it was quite quick. Then I borrowed a 205mi16 for a week, my god its fast. I'd forgotten how good 205mi's are, tempted to get another! Have a chat with Miles about the conversion, his conversions are very good, one of the few people Id let loose on my car :lol:

 

Better brakes at the front are more important than better brakes at the back, as long as the drums are in good condition theyre perfectly adequate and the drum handbrake is usually better.

cool i think the head gasket is going on my pug and it have changed so many things on it and it still misses and cuts out so i would feel happier with a better engine because dont want to get rid of her. thank you for all the help everyone

Why not get hold of a good condition 1600, along with the ecu, injectors, alternator and everything else! That way, you change everything that could cause the engine to run a bit dog ish.

changed my engine the other weekend from a 1900 gti to a 2.0l 16v 306 s16 lump drove in to my mates barn at 8am and drove it home at 3pm that afternoon job done it don't half make a diffrence!!!!!!!!!

Good retort ;) , but you know that's not true. As I've said before, I've been happy with the performance of my Mi but I didn't feel it made it any more enjoyable than the previous 1.6 8v, and if anything it could be more frustrating on the road as illegal speeds are achieved so damn quickly that you don't have time to savour the fun. But that's just my opinion. On the road, the biggest advantage to having the added performance is in overtaking dawdlers, and not being shown up by rep diesels and chavs in Punto turbos.

 

With all that said, I still crave more power like the rest of us :), and wouldn't say no to a 250bhp engine! I'm only human after all :)

Actually I have to agree with you to be honest, one of the most fun drives I've had recently was a couple of weeks ago when my Golf was in the garage (again!! thankfully I've sold the thing now as it was the most unreliable bad handling car I have ever had - Mk4 GTI by the way) and I got a 1.4 8V mk4 polo as a courtesy car that was knackered and had 4 ditchfinder tyres on and had about 40bhp....it was absolutely brilliant!! you could nail it everywhere and never go over the speed limit and it would literally drift round every corner it had that little grip. I had forgotten you could have so much fun at such low speeds and safely!!

 

So the lesson is erm....buy s*it cars and put rubbish tyres on them....possibly B)

I think I'd go a different way. Having spent month building my car I think i'd go a buy one done. Easier said than done but it's possible. For the £2k it's going to cost you you'd find something std ish (with Mi of course!) for £2500. Spending time look around would still be more time effective than building something. Especially is you don't have the time or skills. It's not difficult but it's time consuming.

I wouldn't go back to an 8v now. Mi16 is so much better. Even better on fuel. I'm considering getting rid of my A6 diesel and buying a std ish Mi to run to work in, the petrol/diesel offset almost isn't worth it.

both the 1.6 and MI are equally as good for different reasons, having driven a 1.6 which caused me to buy an MI, i would now own both willingly.

 

although that being said i would spend my money converting the 8v to after market management and wasted spark, its a great engine, somewhat let down by it's ignition system. Batfink and I have often discussed taking a 1.6 and putting management on it to make it utterly reliable and drivable.

 

 

 

second sarty on the disc brakes, the drums are fine on the rear, mine stops like hitting a wall and still has drums.

i've gone full circle.

started with a 1.6gti, changed engine to a 1.9, bought 1.9 8v's then an mi16

now i'm back with a 1.6 again

It wont be the fastest but i'll be having fun....

have i got old?

The 1.6 on a decent ECU works wonder's, I gained 9bhp and a nice load of Torque, No more AFM or Dizzy's which is great.

If your feeling up to it, you should really consider dropping in the mi yourself. Its one of the most rewarding things Ive accomplished in amatuer mechanics, and will teach you a lot about how these things work, especially if you have to remake the ecu wiring from scratch :P

 

This forum is packed with detailed info on how to accomplish it, so you can never really get stuck. When I did mine, I had a couple of coffee stained print-outs and a haynes manual. Im frankly amazed it even fired up but when it did, it was definately miller time :blink:

 

Best of luck anyway, the Mi conversion is properly worth it however you accomplish it.
