Phase 1.5 - Phase 2 1.6 Cambelt The Same ?

Recommended Posts

My car is a 1991 phase 2 1.6 and im swaping my engine for a 1.6 from a 1990 phase 1.5 but have bought a timing belt for the later car as im changing while its out of the car and have just had a thought ,are they the same ? my new belt has 113 teeth

Will this be ok for the older engine ?

Any help will be much appreceiated as i was hoping to do it today

Thanks

the later engines have a different tensioner (eccentric) and the shorter belt, not sure exactly when they changed over, pop the covers off for a look, you may be lucky.

if not, its still a fairly late engine so may have the hole tapped for the later tensioner.

As above it depends on what tensioner you've got but i'd imagine both would have the earlier spring loaded version rather than the later eccentric tensioner, only 92' onwards afaik used the eccentric.

My 93 on a K-reg has the eccentric tensioner, ific this was brought up before and it was 92 onwards. Not 100% though.

Spring loaded tensioner setups (upto 91) have 113 teeth on the belts

Eccentric tensioner setups (after 91) have 114 teeth.

I can confirm this as my spring loaded one had 113 when I changed it the other week. Always count the teeth on the old belt and intended replacement though.
