Big End/main Bearings

Recommended Posts

Rob Turbo

I know what I need when it comes to the big end bearings, but when it comes to the main bearings I'm confused with the part numbers on service box, there's not just standard size and repair, there's different colours, each colour has standard and repair, so is it just a case of taking the old shells out and finding a colour on the back of them?

What else needs replacing while I'm on, do I need to change the rod bolts and main bearing cap bolts?

My shopping list so far is,

Big end bearings

Main bearings

Thrust Bearings

Rod bolts

Main bearing cap bolts

Flywheel bolts

Crankshaft oil seals

Piston rings

Which all comes to £309.86 from peugeot, which, quite simply, I'm not going to be paying! I'll drop the engine in a skip before I pay that! Where will I be able to get the bits from other than peugeot? And what, if anything, can I do without on the list?

Thanks,

Rob

Rob, I bought my bearings from a local engine repair specialists, iirc when I bought my mains it was £20 for the set

Also - had my liners honed and new piston rings fitted for £80. as well as having the rods check for being oval

I have a set of brand new 1.9 Mi16 big-end shells that I don't need (since having a re-grind), PM me if you're interested. :)

Edit - they're genuine Peugeot ones too.

i use 1 of 2 good engine macineist .... one in darlo "Northeast engines" and "amac enginering" in northallerton

i work for peugeot and would never consider their prices

take the block or bearings down to the workshop and they will find a cheaper option and supply needed parts

as they do it for a living they only use top quality parts

This is an XU10 engine, pug have different part numbers for the XU9 ones so I'm presuming they're different, thanks anyway!

I'll try my local motorfactors tomorrow, if they can't help I'll try the place I got some valve shims from a while ago!

Thanks for the info Jim, I'll add them to the list.

do you know if your crank needs a grind or just a cleanup yet?

Ask Miles as I remember him mentioning he can still supply the lead backed bearings which most places dont do any more, they are a little softer IIRC and don't damage the crank/rod as much if they do go, quite important in an engine that gets used hard :)

The crank is ok as far as I can see, and the bearings in the engine all have "STD" stamped on the back of them so it's never been played with either!

Where did you go to for your piston rings and how much?

I took the main bearing shells out this morning and had a look at the back of them, the top half (that stays in the block) all have the same numbers on the back "S/C 94c" "E180472", but the bottom half (that comes off in the bearing cap) are the same except one, 4 of them have "S/C 85c" "E180211" and one has "S/C 27j" "E180211", so the difference is only in the top line, instead of 85c it's 27j, is there an actual difference in the bearing here or is it the 'E' number that matters?

Take your crank to an engine machine shop, ask them to check journal dimensions, polish, and supply bearings. Job sorted.
