Weber 45's For Xu10j4rs

Has anyone done this conversion yet? I can't seem to find anyone that has. I'm struggling with knowing how to tackle the ignition side of things, I was hoping to run standalone system and try and keep it as simple as possible. I am able to run a distributer from the exhaust cam, but which one and what about coil ? how do i get them working correctly? Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

why go backwards would be my first thought!

far far simpler to fit throttlebodies on the RS engine.

I don't see it as going backwards, I like the raw mechanics of carbs and i'm trying to get away from fancy electronics and just keep it simple.

I find a set of simple injectors far easier to comprehend that carbs!

I agree with WP, it seems a bit of a bad choice going backwards in terms of the technology!

If you run standalone ignition system, no need for distributor at all.

I have Omex running a coilpack on mine.

I;ve driven one on Carb's and it hardly felt any better than the std injection as you'll maybe get a max of 10bhp gain from them as loosing the mapping of the ignition will loose you power.

But if he runs standalone he wont lose the mapping of the ignition.

Bottom line is, get the ignition mapped nicely and the carbs well jetted theres no reason it wont make good power. People who dont like carbs are generally just scared of them. I will now await 3 pages of posts telling me im wrong and carbs are s*ite- so good luck with that everyone.

Matt Holley on here is running a carb'ed GTI6 engine, which you would have thought someone could have mentioned by now instead of poo pooing your idea... :)

Other than the additional £1500 for the mapping and ecu etc...

If you get a set of carbs cheap I am pretty sure with mappable ignition you could do it a lot cheaper than the throttle bodies route and get very similar performance.

I always understood that on carbs you can get pretty much the same peak power but just a lose a bit of the drivability in the mid-range as you can't map as precisely.

Yes I am, I use a dta mapped ignition with it and its drives very well, well behaved etc and makes good power, I got 180 atw with those and some newman cams, I cant see I would have got more power or better drivabilty with TBs tbh.

Its all down to your budget, I already had the carbs and manifold so for the extra it cost for an ecu and map it made more sense to go with the carbs, anyone thats been out in the car will say its great fun. :D

If you have the money then go for Tbs but dont let people tell you they are useless without trying one thats been done :P

On the topic of an ignition only ECU, I have a Megajolt v3.2 system which may be of use to you? It would come with the ECU itself, loom, tps (suitable for webers), EDIS 4 module and loom, VR sensor and if required a coilpack (Ford or Peugeot). The software is also included but there are loads of help and info at autosportlabs.com. These are great little computers which for a budget item really seem to work well. The only things extra you would need would be a trigger wheel (36-1) and to extend the looms into your cars wiring.

Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks for the usefull comments guys, seems not all of you out there are just dissing others ideas.

I think the best route is to get a standalone management, i think it will give the best results with the easiest of installation, would be interestsed in the megajolt system (PM sent)

I'll let you know how i get on.
