Blasting/powder Coating Advice

Recommended Posts

Looking at the frame on my CTI it's pretty corroded in places so could benefit from a sand blast and powder coat i'm thinking (depending on price ) but the frame has quite few plastic/nylon bushes in the various joints. Anyone know whether these are likely to be damaged by the blasting process and whether the heating for the powder coating is likely to damage/melt them?

cheers

I'd imagine it would mate,

im not a pro at this kind of thing but i know with powder coating the item has to be baked to at least 180C and that would probably melt or weaken the bushes.

I'd also say the blasting wouldn't do them any good either (if it can strip paint off easily what could it do to a bush  )

But this is just my guess im unsure of how durable these bushes are and weather or not they would get damaged in either process.

Probably be best to remove them at least if there ok you could re-use them were as you could damage them if you left them in.

Well i phoned the place where I thought i'd probabaly get it done , and basically they've said it all depends on what type of nylon/plastic the bushes are made out of. The powder coat items are put in the oven at 220 Celcius so they'd have to withstand that. The chap said some nylon can withstand 300C but i guess theres no way of knowing what exact material they're made out of :( and i'm not sure if i want to risk buggering all the bushes as the joins are all pressed together and not bolted so if the bushes melt, the whole setup is fooked!

I think it might be a case of wire brush and coat of hammerite instead then

Yeah dont risk it mate...most plastic gets ruined in the oven.
