I think I have figured out that one side of the spring goes under the pedal (as shown) and that the other side attaches to the fixed parts of the pedal box somewhere, but where?

If you can get a pic of the actual box I can point it out, the spring hooks round the pedal, then the other end locates in a small hole on the pedal box frame.

The hole is in the corner of the bracket the pedal bolts through, the rounded end of the spring goes on the pedal, the more square end hooks through that hole.

Like this?

If this is right I think I have messed up with the clutch as when I try to adjust the cable the pedal doesn't lift; all that happens is that the clutch arm moves :(

I've checked and the release bearing has come off; can it be re-fitted without stripping everything off again?

Turns out you can get the gearbox far enough off without removing everything (engine mounts, gear selectors, wiring and long driveshaft still in) to check the bearing and put it back on, but I've damn well broken it  why are they so delicate?

I found the Valeo release bearing to be much more robust, but was lazy and couldn't be bothered waiting in for one

A lot of garages and factors get their parts from these guys, so I have found it cheaper to go direct; one of the guys even gave me a discount because we both own GTi's :)

No, the spring thats under the pedal box should be in the middle above the bolt, you can see where the paint is marked from it being there previously.

The pedal is normally sat on the floor due to the spring tension when its fitted but pulling the cable @ the gearbox end towards the radiator should lift the pedal even if the release bearing has fallen off imo.
