Anyone Ever Used A Centre Silencer As A Backbox?

Recommended Posts

Having some difficulty with my exhaust system...

I have no back box and wanted a cheap way so get a straight through style backbox to help exhaust flow. I know there are silencers out there to buy but I have a good centre silencer and pipe lying around and wondered if I could just cut it out and join it up to the end of my current centre section???

The system I have on now has a twin downpipe leading to a small (cherry bomb-ish) centre silencer.

How loud would it be, I don't want too loud but more over standard backbox and it I'm not bothered what it looks like?

Anyone done this before or think it's a stupid idea ?

Cheers, Matt

Well you haven't said how big the silencer is which I guess is the main factor in how much silencing it does.

Is it definately straight through as I'm sure a lot of the factory silencers just have the packing wool everywhere and not just round the centre tube, and is it a constant bore all the way through?

I know someone who used a mid box off a 1.9gti as the backbox on a 2.0 turbo with no other silencers and to be honest it sounded terrible really droney, raspy and boy racer nova like!

If you have a mid-box though I can't see it being that loud with 2 boxes in it, my only concern would be whether its the right bore through it and how it is packed. You can get some really nice Jetex mid boxes for about £30, I have one on my car and they are great, I just used a larger mid box as the backbox, but mine is a turbo so can do without 2 boxes.

Just try it and see what its like....

Its the mid-silencer from a standard 205 gti system made by WALKER or I have another made by Bosal.

I can see down through the mid-silencer with a torch and its straight through with no wool, the bore is contstant. Its just like an old Big Bore 2 Peco I used to have except shorter and smaller in diameter so I guess that means more noise.

we did something similar to a mates car at work. what we used was a back box of a ford maverick jeep i think,it was short and slim so was just like a center box.

it sounded like a tractor! way to loud and not a very nice note, but it got better at really high revs but was horrible on long journeys.

so he went back to standard not long after.

worth a try though, but try not to mangle the orriginal one incase you change your mind.
