Speedo Dead.

Recommended Posts

timmsy19

Hi all

Was on the way to the south meet today when my speedo started giving strange readings and bounching more than usual.

On the way back it competely stopped (in a 50mph average speed zone might i add) it gave a ticking noise for a while but didnt come back to life again. Anyhow stopped at the services for food but when we set off again it wasnt ticking or doing anything.

Anyone got any ideas?

thanks

Graham

if you lean far enough you can just about reach it... although since your car is complete it might be best from underneath!

if you can take the clocks out release the cable from the speedo, but car on axle stands start engine and put in gear and see if the cable turns,if cable turns speedo kaput, cable doesnt turn get a pair of pliers and pull inner cable out check for broken strands.if cable good then its the speedo drive

I'm having problems with my speedo too. Early in the morning it'll make a horrid whine / whering noise if I go above 20mph. The needle will bounce around a little at low speeds and get to a bigger bounce at higher speeds.

However, after driving it for about 5 miles it stops doing this and then its fine all day long. I'm guessing moisture is getting into it overnight and making it slip until the moisture is burnt away. Either way, its telling me the speedo cable needs replacing. I needed it replacing a fair few years back and the garage told me its a poor design - the clocks have a metal socket, but the speedo cable feel is a nylon / plastic one. So eventually the speedo cable plastic feed wears down and thus the speedo stops working.

Got a speedo cluster you can transfer into your clocks if you like mate, you can have it for nowt as it was destined for the bin. Give me a ring or PM. :)
