Ignition Module Wiring

Recommended Posts

I have been trying to get my head around whether the wiring on my car is correct or needs some adjustment.

Reason I mention this is because whilst removing the engine (me on the jack my (non mechanical) brother on checking everything was clear and unattached) managed to rip the plug clean off the dizzy wiring from the igntion module. DOH!

So step in some new loom making. With the old loom in one hand and a haynes in the other what could go wrong I hear you ask.

So far:

7 Pin module connector (pin 7 empty)

Old loom:

Pin 1. Coil negative,

Pin 2. Earthed to coil mount

Pin 3. Unsheilded earth lead to Dizzy plug

Pin 4. To a white 2pin plug which I believe goes to the ignition switch

Pin 5. Dizzy plug

Pin 6. Dizzy plug (not sure which is which with these two I'll just make sure the same wire goes to the same pin on the new loom)

Then when looking at the haynes manual:

(No pin numbers so its a guess as to which is pin 1 but i'll follow whats to similar the loom)

Pin 1. Coil positive (and igntion switch)

Pin 2. Coil negative

Pin 3. Earth

Pin 4. Dizzy Plug

Pin 5. Dizzy Plug

Pin 6. Dizzy Plug

(again as long as I'm reading it correctly)

Any suggestions/clues etc?

It's like this (in the case of Jetronic management) :

..pin No.3 is a shielding wire

Thats confused me even further.

I forgot to mention that the engine ran with the old loom connected as described above, but was looking to see if maybe it would have caused a weak spark or such ignition related problems?
