Rear Brake Pads

Recommended Posts

Rafe Dent

After my 205 had to re-test on rear LH brake not working (handbrake fine), I bought these the other day (on the equivalent of Exchange Mart out here leboncoin.fr if anyone's interested), and on the back of the pads there are small lugs which sit in the piston grooves, which I would imagine stop it (the piston) turning. That all right? Just so I know before I take the old one to bits and can't get down the shops with it all in bits and peices. Thanks, Rafe. PS This is a one-and-a-half brake set for some odd reason best known to seller, but the whole one is the left side.

That's right, the lug stops the piston turning, so the handbrake auto-adjuster can work properly

That's correct - two of the pads should have a tab on to stop the caliper piston turning.

Unrelated note - you have checked/replaced the compensator, haven't you, as that's the usual cause of an individual rear caliper not working on the footbrake but working fine on the handbrake?

Haven't checked that, though I did read that when the compensator fails you get more rather than less pressure - unless you know differently. Oh, and 2 years ago when I had my last 'controle technique' (MOT), I took it to a guy who de-seized it. Charged me 100€ and lasted all of about a couple of months. PS Thanks for great (and fast) replies, Rafe

Assuming we're talking about the standard 1.9 GTi non-ABS inline compensators, they can fail either way - either fail in the shut position (so you get very little fluid flow, and thus no/low brake effort) or in the open position (so you get no pressure limiting, and hence excessive brake effort)

Well that's great to know in advance. Bet they're even more expensive than an exit pump that I bought this morning for my old dish-washer (hundred quid!). Yep, standard 205 GTi 1991 1.9, slightly lowered. Will change the caliper, re-attach cables etc, and see where I'm at - presumably a few stripped threads later, snapped blead valves, and shinned knuckles. PS Also failed on 195/50/15 tyres !! Got his little book out - not allowed, have to put the snows back on.

BTW, can I check compensator, or do I just have to replace it? Thanks, R

They used to be around £25 from GSF a while back, but no idea if they still do them, or how much Peugeot charge.

Difficult to properly test, but one that's giving no/low effort will normally not pass much fluid when you try to bleed the brakes, so that's a bit of a clue.

yes they still do them, gone up to about £33 each now, bought a pair to go on my zx a few weeks ago.

Spot on, as ever. Swapped over callipers - no difference at all, as I'm sure you'd all guessed. Handbrake still works fine, but at least I know how the brakes are put together now. Or more so.

So these compensators, any chance of a part number please? And presumably Citroen will have them as well? Haven't found anywhere out here yet that sells cheap parts, not quite like the UK anyway.

And it's quite an easy swap-over? Thanks. I have searched, but it's never really that obvious to find anything precise along the lines of idiots-guide-to-the-easier-205-tasks.

Got a deadline of Thursday to get it back in for the re-test, or else it's back to square one.
