Lazy Reving 1.9 8v

Recommended Posts

I still have my missfire problem, but i have also noticed when its ticking over/reving its kinda lazy and not "lively"!! what would this be down too? timming need a bit of advancing?

Also on the same subject, for some of you who know the in's and outs of gti's, when the car is idleing, the car sounds "lumpy" and "poppy", is that due to to rich/lean etc??? help please.

P.s, when "one" set's up the timing with the car running, do you do it when idleing, or how the haynes says about reving at 3500rpm or something?? cheers

Missfire... What have you tried? When does it miss? all the time? only at a certin RPM? Id look at this first and Id leave the ignition timing alone for now unless you have a strobe/timing light to check it with? If its massivly overfueling it will be lazy.

Check:

Water in the plug recesses

New plugs

New Dizzy cap + rotor arm

New leads

Borrow Coil

New / borrow Ignition amp + Paste

Sounds like its running rich, but it probably will be if its missing. Pop the spark plugs out and post a piccy :)

If it is Id swap out the ECU temp sender @ £16 (blue, by the SAD on that water block) and go from there. Next point of call being getting the CO right (at idle at least) by adjusting the AFM screw (mixture) and throttle body screw (idle speed). Your need to take it to a garage for this or ponce a CO machine from someone.

If you fancy a trip to Dartford early tomorrow morning, I have a few amps and a CO machine.

Dizzy cured my missfire. It was at exactly 4k tho, didnt move. Other misfires Ive had have been less picky at where they appeared and were down to other components/moisture.

My line of thinking is unburnt gasses/fuel causing the exhaust to pop. Id expect if theres too much fuel overwhelming the spark it will rev lazy also. Check the condition of the plugs to tell for sure tho :) nice and easy

You should be running between 1.0 and 1.5 co IIRC at idle, haynes has the exact figure.

To set the timing it's pretty much best to do it driving. you aim to have the car at about 3k-3.5k in 5th and then apply full throttle. if there's no pinking then stop advance the dizzy, repeat until you head a bit of pinking, then knock it back a fraction and presto. It's handy to have a short ish straight with a roundabout either end and laybys halfway along on either side

oh and an 11mm spanner.

As for the lazyness, thrashing the 8v's seem to help loosen them up, just not too much as they can peak and then get lazy again, which can't be cured with a thrashing.

I've had misfires down to leads mainly, although coil or amp are also problems aswell.
