Diesel Gearbox Recommendation

Hi,

 

I'm off to the Nurburgring later in the year. Currently have a 1.6 box on my 2L 8V Turbo from 406.

Thinkin the 1.6box will be really tedious and annoying on the long motorway cruises so looking for a 205 Diesel box.

 

What would be the best way forward do you think for the Nurburgring trip?

 

A: Take off 1.6 box and bolt on the Diesel one

B: Use 5th gear from Diesel box on the 1.6

C: Use Final Drive from Diesel box on the 1.6

For what it's worth, having done the trip over to the 'Ring several times in a 205 with a 1.6 GTi gearbox, there's no issue at all.

 

Personally, I wouldn't say that a 1.6 GTi gearbox is going to be a particularly good match for a 2.0 Turbo, particularly at the 'Ring, and a longer 1.9 GTi or diesel box would be a better bet. I would just swap the box complete rather than making a hybrid of the two.

A friend of mine has a diesel box in his 2.0 turbo and he said its not to bad but would like better acceleration,he said it feels like it will pull forever though. He's thinking about fitting a 1.9 GTI box as the 1.6 GTI box is to close ratio. Personally id go for the 1.9 box as it is aswell,i think the 1.6 is too close and the diesel box it too long,i'd go for the happy medium.

1.9 box is an easy fit and reasonable ratios, though for those sort of trip I would recommend an Mi with a 1.9 final drive. 1.9 ratios for 1,2,3 and a longer 4 and 5.

 

70mph @ 3,200 rpm and just off boost.

 

I have this in my CTI and it cruises lovely and economically
