Engine Tick

Recommended Posts

kennygti

This is a hard one to describe but when i drive the pug the engine seems to make a ticking noise from the engine (sounds like a sewing machine noise) and it gets noticably louder the further you put your foot down. If you let of the throttle and just let it coast it goes away or is unnoticeable on idle. Any ideas? Im thinking possibly an exhaust leak although unlikely as the exhaust is nearly new. Although saying that it is a manifold back system with no cat. Mine is a 1993 with a cat. Could it just be the sound of a tinging de-cat???? :)

It sounds to me like you have a leaking exhaust manifold, I would say either one of the gaskets is gone or one of the bolts isn't in/done up properly.

Yer im pretty convinced on the exhaust side of things to be honest. It isn't a very good fit the aftermarket exhaust to be fair. Its a Sportex system my dad got me for my birthday so will feel guilty replacing it but looks like its goin to be done :)

Also another quick question. With my car being fitted with a cat from the factory and me removing it, will this confuse the ecu or make it fuel differently from a non cat model. Its got a motronic ECU?

Possible cracked exhaust manifold or leaking gasket,or if your lucky just a loose manifold bolt :)

if it is cracked would it be worth just replacing the cast iron unit or go for a 4 branch? Is it really worth me spending nearly £200 or will a standard manifold be sufficient?

check the location of your HT leads . i had a loose one what wasn't making a proper connection and was arcing to the plug and making a god awful ticking noise

It really depends on how standard your car is,if its tuned then id go for a 4 branch just to help improve the flow,if its pretty standard id just fit a standard one back on,the later manifolds are fitted with bracing to stop them cracking so would be worth making sure the one you get has the bracing on it.

mine was on the plug itself but i cant see why it couldn't be at the dizzy end.

Id go for the 4 branch then,it makes the most of the mods your doing.

Have you got the standard air box at the mo? If not and you have the K&N induction kit then a quick check is to take a look down the back of the engine with it running and give it a rev from the throttle body, you should hear it. Best to do it when its cold as the noise should be louder as the crack will seal slightly as the manifold warms and expands

Right ive had a fiddle and nothing has changed although it sounds close to the leads thinking it could be injectors now. I really dont know as im not too hot on these engines.

I had a tick  my manifold was shot on one of the manifold branches...was probably worn away over the years with condensation settling from the head to manifold..anyway changed it for a good un and still there  now I'm thinking its an injector problem do you reckon they will be okay with ultra sonic cleaning or is it new injectors?

I don't think so. The lambda sensor is located upstream (before) the cat, so it's measuring the exhaust gas straight out of the engine, more or less, so I don't think, therefore, that removing the cat can make a difference to what the lambda sensors measures.

I hope its summat simple like the exhaust for you mate. I had worse with mine - I heard a tick coming from the engine and did exactly like you said got louder with revs and hard to hear when idling and disappears when let off throttle and coasting. I listened to it in the engine bay and concluded it was the exhaust ticking on summat as thats exactly what it sounded like and the direction of the sound.

How wrong was I - turned out to be a dead engine that had ate itself due to low oil pressure / dodgy oil / summat wrong with the engine and bits grinding against each other / etc. Had to spend a lot of ££ getting the flippin thing transported and having its engine reconditioned.;)

i had this exact problem. You say you have put a new system on, have you replaced the manifold gaskets, reason i ask is these can go on upside dwn, they will look fine, but if you run your finger around the bore you will feel it obstructs the port by about 1/4 of an inch and causes the exact sound you can hear ( tap tap tap tap). So my advice, unbolt the manifold and double check they are the right way around.

cheers guys you have all been helpful.

Mark that woulkd be appreceiated if you could do that for me.

CaptainK It sounds just like an exhaust tick but appears to be coming from injector/spark plug area rather than down the back of the block. It still goes well once its picked it feet up but is soooooooo sluggish up till about 3500rpm

DJ i replaced the exhaust from the manifold back so didnt actually remove the manifold itsself or are you talking about the cone gasket thingy in which case i have replaced it.

Again your all stars and cheers for all the help

Mine sounded like a type writer ever since I owned it, I thought it was a blowing manifold to start with but after replacing the gasket and getting the manifold welded it still ticked :) When I checked the valve clearances I removed a cam cap and it was scored up, I removed the head and where the cam sits was badly pitted and scored. Someone must of ran it low on oil at some point
