Does This Sound Like A Dodgy Starter?

Recommended Posts

pugpete1108

been round tying up some loose ends on the pug today and i hooked the car up with jump leads to check some electrics...

i couldn't help but turn the key over to see a little bit of life in the old girl but something aint right.

the starter turns along with the engine (so not seized as its been sitting for a year and a half) but not enought. it turns for a second or two and then stops and it sound really laboured.

my first thought was a shagged starter motor (original 1.6 one, which to my knowledge has never been replaced).

what do you think?

Get a known good battery on there (not through jump leads), remove the plugs & see what its like for crankng over then.

I had the same thing happen a while ago and it was a dodgy connection on the jump leads

trouble is i haven't got agood battery, the one on my 306 is a bit iffy as it sounds tired when starting and the one on my mg is flat.

and at the moment im too skint to buy a new one just to have it go flat before i get the car up and running.

i tried connecting at the battery which is in the boot but thought it might be a poor connection so i tried it at the distribution blockin the bay and it was still the same

surely though if the jump car is running it will be producing enough current?

i will check the voltage on the 306 one when running and remove the plugs and try again.

failing that will have to buy a new one grrr squeek squeek

I had a similar thing when trying to start mine back in october (it had sat for nearly 3 years though).

It took a fully charged battery and my company car running with jump leads, an additional jump pack and all the plugs removed before the engine turned over at a satisfactory speed. (Almost as if the cylinder needed a clean up). After this it would turn over normally with just a fully charged battery.

Then with all the ignition parts cleaned up or replace started and ran beautifully after a couple of minutes smoking (I'd put some oil down the bores to help get things moving smoothly)

even with jump leads, let the battery charge up a bit first.

Mine was being very dodgy when just jump starting it. (sounding laboured as you described)

so i took the battery out and charged it over a weekend, and it started first time.

i'm not so sure the battery will hold charge as its been flat for at least a year, my guess is its knackered.

i'll have to bit the bullet and just buy a new one, i thought i might as well buy some new jump leads too as the ones i have are like 900yrs old and falling to bits, so maybe its that
