Fuel Pump Not Priming..?

Recommended Posts

Scooby Max

Hi all..

Basically, having put everything back together under the bonnet, i.e. - replaced cylinder head, water pump, cam belt etc etc..

Looked forward to turning it over and "hey presto"...... Nope..!!!

I've got plenty of spark, so looked at the fuel and noticed no fuel being pumped at the rail on cranking over?

I've checked the fuse (glove compartment), changed the tachymetric relay and the pump and still nothing..!

Can't hear the pump priming either..

I'm still scratching my bloody head..!! :D

Any clues..?

I had a problem on mine where the wiring loom was broken, this in shorted the pump.

Have any wires been moved?

Hi Paul,

No wires have been moved. I've checked the earth, and that's fine.

I put a direct live feed to the pump and that worked ok.

So.. am I over looking something simple..?

Btw, I bought the car as a none runner due to head gasket failure, so I'm assuming

everything else was ok.

You should be able to get the fuel pump running by simply bridging two wires where the tachy relay goes. If it buzzes then it's obviously not the pump. I believe how the tachymetric relay works is it needs to see a cranking signal from the engine before it activates the fuel pump. How it sees that is a 12 volt signal from the ignition amplifier (Or coil?). Anyway if you don't get the 12 volts from the ignition, the tachy relay won't run the fuel pump.

Hope this helps mate

Liam.

Thanks Liam, that makes a lot of sense..

Earlier on, I noticed I've made a cock-up whilst changing the cambelt.. :D the crank position

is one revolution out of sync with the camshaft..! - which I'll sort in the morning.

So this might explain not getting the 12v supply..?

Cheers

Max

8 or 16v?

I think the 16v only primes on cranking whereas the 8v pirmes for 2-3 secs when you turn the ign on. I stand to be proved worng tho!

It's an 8v and yes you can usually hear it prior to cranking.

According to the Haynes manual - Page234, 11.3

An in-line fuse is located behind the main fuse board.

Well I can't see it..?

Anyone else seen it..?
