6 Speed Gearbox

Recommended Posts

Alteran

Hi Guys,

I tried a search but nothing conclusive turned up. As the title, has anyone fitted a Gti-6 gearbox into a 205? Will it fit? Can you utilise the same driveshafts? I've heard stories that the N/S/F wheel fouls on the longer gearbox.

Any info would be appreciated

Liam.

A few have done this. The only experience I have was with SuperJosh's, which was an Mi16 with 6 speed box.

I seem to remember he enjoyed having the extra-gearing (and I'm not necessarily a big fan of that as I'm not sure 6th on that box isn't just 5th on another (?)), but I certainly remember how it effected the turning circle/steering lock. Pretty bad IIRC.

I was just curious as to whether the standard 1.6/1.9 engine would benefit from this gearbox? I have a Turbo Diesel gearbox on my 1.6 as I favoured economy over accelaration. But after driving it for a fortnight, I'm beginning to think maybe the gearing is a bit too long! I think it'd be ok if it was mated to the 1.9 engine but the 1.6 is very revvy with not a lot of low down torque. I still have the 1.6 gearbox but I feel the ratio's are a bit too close for what I use the car for. So I was thinking the Gti-6 box' would be better. Or maybe the 1.9 box'?

Super Josh

As Rich said, I used to run a six speeder, complete arse in a 205. No lock, forever swapping cogs and the gearchange isn't as good as a 5 speed. Due to the 6 speed having a narrow gearset, you end up with the box not smotthly going into gear until it's warmed up properly.

As Rich alluded to, the ratios for the first 5 gears are the same as a 1.6 'box and 6th is the same as the 1.9 5th cog.

cant you get the 1.6 box and just get a longer 5th gear put in?then you have fast take off and low revs ot speed

no, it's not difficult, but makes for a horrible gearbox.

there is another option but it's not cheap, which is to get a 6 speed cluster that fits inside the BE3/5 casing, I believe Avanti and Sadev amongsth a few do them, the group A 309 that Richard Burns drove ran a ZF version of this.

It'll fall off a cliff when you go from 4th to 5th.

doesnt that depend on what ratio you go for?

it will fail an mot if you do not put some kind of stop on the steering rack

I had it on a 205 and although I liked the ratios (never had the problem engaging gears) it was heavy and it was annoying at small T-junctions due to the lock. I fitted a 1.9 box with 1.6 FD to a friends car so got rid of the gti-6 box.

It was easy to fit as I got the bits i needed from a spare 205 gearbox but I certainly wouldnt do it again.

I'd leave it as it is, the 1.6 loves to rev and it doesn't hurt. A 1.6 would be gutless and have a massive gap 4th->5th if you fitted a longer gear. I love the frantic, buzzy characteristic.

And my mates red one I took you out in a few weeks ago. I absolutely love the six speed box, it may not be any faster, in fact it might even be slower, but it makes the driving experience much more fun IMO. So if you are building a race car, or a track car then forget it, but if you are building a 'fun' car then give it a go. The steering lock is only an occasional issue when parking, the fact that Rich didn't even know I was running a six speed says it all, I seem to remember going right round a tightish roundabout with no problems on that journey.

Josh, I have never had any problems getting it into gear hot or cold, maybe you had a bad one?

Its not worth it mate, i have one in my 205 and i think its coming right back out, you need to change so much it simply not worth the extra gear, to get better lock you need 309 lower arms and spacers and ideally compact brakes like 4 pots, my gti6 calipers hit the box before the tyre. I have a xu10 5 speed which will be just a fun.

That website has some good information on the Gearbox ratios and also look at what is said about the 1.6 box and its down falls with the information to try and fix the problems.

No mention about the 6-speed box but does mention the ratios.
