hi all,

i'm after info for carb conv. of 8v gti, bike carbs or webers ?, prices, power gains reliability and fuel economy etc...... i've dug out an old price list from skip browns (2002) this says £980 +vat fitted price for twin webers is this still in the ball park or have costs shot up since ?

cheers

you'll get everything you need on this forum... all the parts and all the advice..... you'll be able to do it for a hell of a lot less than 980+vat!!!

Off you go to the wanted section.... Carbs, manifold and linkages!! Then to the main page for the fitting guide... (think there is one there!!)

Edit: didnt see all that you asked for.... I have sold a pair of decent 45s plus manifold for 340 before, But I have also bought 40s recently for less.... Bike carbs again the same kind of prices, depending on how lucky you are with ebay etc.... You can use the standard management too so if you decide to sell the car or the carbs you can fit the injection back on.... or if you want to go further you can get ignition only ecus for controlling, well... the ignition while the carbs do the rest... it all depens how much power you want and how much you want to spend!!! Try a search through some of the projects or members works... you'll find a very wide range of possibilities for carbs!!

Depends on whether you're doing the spannering or getting another to do it for you?

I'd look at around £450+ today for the carbs, manifold, linkages, plus filters/regulators etc and extra fuel lines. All obtainable either here or on ebay.

Then its a case of removing the ECU and the inlet manifold and fitting the carbs on. On mine I left the wiring in place in case I did anything silly and bagged it and tucked it all out of the way!

But if you buy the carbs cheap then factor in an overhaul kit for each carb and the posibility of the odd new jet (parts are easy to come by). Then once fitted up it's best to have them set up properly on a rolling road. It all adds up though so get the best you can to start with. Baz had a set of 45's complete for sale a while back.

forgot, power gains, they're best with a different cam and head work but work fine on a std set up. As for economy, well they do increase the fuel used as they're just not as economical as a metered injection set up. However mines track biased so economy isn't up there for me.

Hi

i have a 309 running on Yamaha R1 Bike carbs. Thay can be sorced for about £100. As I didnt fit them I cant comment on the best way to set them up. I am infact researching how to tune tham at the moment.

Bogg bros can do an inlet manafold for it too. My car runs really well on the carbs. Smooth power and steady idle....

No real BHP imcrease but the car has bags of tourque

O and mine eats fuel.... but then it is a track slag....

HTH.

yep agree on the delivery, mine is superb on the 45's. I don't have a choke fitted though which can make starting a pain but when the car is needed I have time for it to get warm!

Some inlet manifolds need adjusting to clear the bracket for the alternator though so bear that in mind.

Mine start from very cold, idle and run very well, and don't drink gallons of fuel at all, all in the setup! No choke either.

They and the Mi16 with Longman inlet will be for sale soon too! The ones MrG mention are gone, 28Craig has them but i believe he's wanting to sell soon, or i have another set of 40's with inlet probably more suited to a 1.6 now surplus.

my engine is standard dkz block and head but running jetronic management, was hoping to improve low down and mid range power/torque, but not at the cost of economy, my other car is a scooby (20mpg on a good day) so don't really want another fuel-aholic in my drive. long term i'm looking at skip brown roadspeed 's' conv. i know it's not the most powerful of conversions but as the article on main website points out it's probably as close to a new engine as i'll get.

cheers for the info
