Water Cooled Oil Cooler

Recommended Posts

swinney88

i've just replaced the engine in my 205. The original engine had the air cooled oil cooler on. Where as the replacement engine has a water cooled one on and the hoses have been cut do the two hoses join one larger hose that comes off the top of the radiator.

cheers

Yes, they both connect to the main top radiator hose.

You could remove the oil-water heat exchange and refit the old air-oil cooler if you wanted though - easy and straight forward to do :)

i had a look at refitting the air cooled one but it has a different way of attaching to the block than the water cooled one so i wasnt sure it would fit.

The air cooled unit and water cooled unit use different mounting plates so be sure to use the right hardware but either should bolt right onto the block. I am using a water cooled/heated unit as it helps to bring the oil up to temp quicker and then keeps it at a steady temp. When using an air cooled unit I found my oil would not get hot enough for ages into my drive. Upto you which you choose maybe try both and see which suits your driving needs better.

The engine came off a 309 then, But they unbolt and bolt back on, easy as that.

The heat exchanger type on the 205 should run remotely on the gearbox then you can use one of BBM hoses to fit if you really want to fit it but most now are filled up with rust and hardly flow any water to heat the oil up at all

205 Heat Exchanger's are fitted on the Gearbox and have a remote filter as well, All 309 GTi's had the exchanger bolted to the block, I;ve had just the same thing delivered to me a susposed 1990 1.9 engine but it's from a 1987 309 GTi but the owner I doubt knew any better
