Engine Cut Out/no Spark

Recommended Posts

Ok so Ive either been sold a turd or just had crap luck.

Its a 205 Cti 1.6

The problem Ive got is I was driving along then the engine cut out. After leaving it to sit for 2 mins it fired up again like nothing had ever happend. Drove about half a mile then it did it again but again started back up. This happened a couple of times in half mile stages until it cut out and never fired up again.

Got the RAC out and they found it only had a spark as you first crank it over to start with but now it has no spark at all. He said he suspected the ignition module so got a new one but didnt solve it (although it wasnt earthed to anything- does it need to be?) also new module had 7 pins but old one had 6 so not even sure if its the right one. Battery is now flat and had no jump leads so thats as far as i got.

So questions are:

1. Firstly are 1.6 cti and gti engines the same (with same module?)

2. Is there any common things to check for that would cause it not to spark?

3. Does the ignition module need to be earthed to anything?

Any help would be great!

It doesn't matter if it's 7 or 6 pin amp either one will do just fine :) .. check the dizzy signal cable (the black one with the yellow 3pin plug) as this cable transmits triggering signal from the dizzy pick up coil to the ignition amp/coil .

Perform basic checks as well - spark plugs , leads , dizzy cap , rotor arm , coil (try with some known good spare coil) , ignition wiring circuit and component connectors … and - fuel pump relay , AFM just in case .

Is this a flip- painted one bought locally off ebay? If so this has stood for a "good" period of time - clean dizzy cap contacts, rotor arm and all HT lead ends as will prob be corroded.

Yes, same engine as GTi

NO, no need to earth module

Thanks for the help! No its not the flip one!

Hopefully Ill get to go through it tomorrow and check all above things.

If I ever get the thing running again hopefully you will see me driving around Truro as I go there for work quite alot.

Just as a follow up from this I fitted the new module properly and made sure the connection was tight. While doing this I found one wire that goes into the module plug had about 1cm of insulation missing from it so was bare wire. I wrapped it in tape hoping this might have been the problem (shorting or something?!)

Anyway it ran fine for 70 miles then cut out again. Started after a few mins then left it for a few hours while I went out. Came back to start it- nothing!

Had a fiddle with connections on coil/module and left for a few mins then it started and got me home fine!

I was just wondering that if leaving it to sit for a few mins after it cuts out and it starting again is a symptom of something????

Ignition amp. overheating .. (if you didn't) you have to re-apply heat sink paste/jelly at the back of the amp. when ever you're removing him from the mounting plate or replacing with new one , if you fail to do this the amp. will start to overheat and it'll burn out .

But it might be the coil as well.. both the amp. and the coil issues are usually heat related (when the engine reaches operating temp.)

Other than that , if it's not ignition related , it could be fuel pump relay (burnt diode inside the relay also causes similar behaviour)

The wire without insulation is just a shielding wire :P it's suppose to be like that .

Yep its got the thermal paste on.

Think if it happens one more time Ill try replacing the coil.

Cheers for the advice

... also , try with some spare (known good) fuel pump relay :)
