Cleaning Engine Block And Paint

Recommended Posts

djinuk

I am currently cleaning my gti6 block, removing the inlet/starter etc , and taping up the ports etc , and degreasing the block.

I am just wondering exactly what method do people attack the block with, and what paint do people use to paint is, includign any primer etc involved.

I've not tried it but I have considered using Nitromorse for degreasing; its a very powerful paint stripper that will also melt plastic etc and it cleans off metal very easily with washing up liquid and water, but it does create some nasty fumes and is corrosive on your skin.

ive used "gunk" from halfords and that works really well and isnt as harmful as nitromorse. ive also used gunk on the engine bay to remove grease from the panels, but i didnt leave it on long, and always washed it down with water after just in case it reacted with the paint.

Super Josh

Hammerite isn't as good as it used to be, before it went all PC and they removed the VOCs etc. I also find the nozzle clogs really easily since they've changed the formula.

I now use Plastikote, which seems to do the trick nicely :)

I've been using brush on hammerite, i found a cheap 5l tub of degreaser from the motorfactors and a rag is all you need, oh and some time...
