Drive Shaft Nut Help!

Anyone got any suggestions for removing a drive shaft nut??

 

Tried today but it didn't budge!! Tried a breaker bar, heat, hammer, and an impact gun (although a cheap one).

 

Anyone got any suggestions, MOT coming up and drive shaft is knocking.

take it to a tyre garage/garage undo it with there air gun then tighten it up with your socket

even better if they do lorry tyres, use the big 1" drive air gun for un doing lorry wheels,they'l even have an impact socket to fit

Heres how i got a particualrly stubborn hub nut undone one day:

A paving slab with a big chunk missing out of it to wedge the wheel and a 7ft scaffolding pole on the breaker bar. I was actually hanging on the bar before the nut started to come loose, christ kows why it was so tight.

The driveshaft nut was siezed on mine too.... I tried a impact wrench, cooking it with a blow torch and penertrating spray and it still wouldn't shift. To remove it, I drilled a small hole into the nut nearly all the way through a used a cold chisel to crack it open. Only takes about 5 mins

I agree, unfourtanatly i was the only person for about 3 miles around......the logistics of it would have been uncomprehendable

.... making sure that you put the wheelbolts back in first, as the disk retaining screw is no match for breaker bar levels of torque B)

To be fair its only the wheel bolts that hold the disks on now they're already all sheared (don't you love garages?).

Time to find some scaffolding by the looks of it :P although i'm a bit worried about too much pressure while its on axle stands :D

All sorted :P

 

End up leaving the wheel on (no centre cap) me standing on the brakes hard and Matt jumping up and down like a mad man on a nice big breaker bar.

mines done now as well had to resort to the drilling method drilled all the way through one side of the nut and about half way through the other side then hit it with a chisel until it surrendered. Those nuts are very hard ended up using cobalt drills and snapped the two smallest ones (I'm a lecky not a mech). but at least its off now once the nut was off it just slipped out with ease.

 

Well now I'm done boasting :rolleyes: a couple of questions for you all

 

1.What if any grease should i use when refitting the drive shaft.

2. Is it better to refit the box then the drive shaft rather than fitting it then resuming the box fit? logic says keep the new shaft in the box as long as possible to avoid damage but i thought I'd check in case I've missed something.

Fit the gearbox first. Then the driveshaft afterwards. Otherwise you will find it gets in the way and is generally a pain.
