Oil, But Where From?

Recommended Posts

bombhead88

Out driving earlier and i got a big cloud of white smoke appear behind,

not a constant plume. Was just for a second or so at about 4,000rpm.

Pulled the car over in a layby to have a look and..

Oil all over the bulkhead, rear of gearbox and hoses. Got car back alright with no problems.

Ive got good oil pressure and good temperatures. Ive checked around and

cant find anything obvious and the oils just ran down bulkhead and made a nice

pool on the tarmac now.

Any ideas whats happened? Only changed the oil and filter a week ago

i had this problem a few times and the cause was oil running out of the top of the dipstick and covering my nice clean engine .... so get yourself some tape and tape the dipstick shut was end of problem for me

As said above, oil being forced out of the dipstick would be my guess judging by your description.

However, simply taping the dipstick in place is a bodge IMO and doesn't fix the underlying issue. Either you need another dipstick because the end is damaged/worn and not holding the dipstick in the tube properly, or you've an issue with the breather system (more likely) or rings (less likely) causing excessive crankcase pressure that's venting by the easiest route - namely the dipstick tube in this instance.
