Breather With Tb's On Gti-6 Engine

Recommended Posts

ok, after taking my inlet off, i suddenly thought how has everyone done the breathers on their cars?

on the gti6 camcover the left hand one runs to the inlet, do i just run this so a catch tank?

and leave the right hand one as normal?

cheers

I think the best way to think of it is allow the car to breathe (crank case circulating fumes I mean), which means they flow round nice & easy, venting to atmosphere at the catch tank rather than being fed back anywhere into the inlet. What I mean is your catch tank has two connections, almost one in one out.

My system (XU10 block like yours), has the lower, smaller crank case breather (not the oil filler tube) coming up to the cam cover. I have an Mi cam cover, so I've tee-d off that tube to go to the catch tank. You can do the same by taking one of the two cam cover outlets to the catch tank, so you don't need a tee piece.

The other connection to my catchtank is from one of the oil filler funnel's outlets.

Hope that makes sense. Matt at QEP advised me along time ago that this type of engine needs to breathe properly, and restrictions can sap power.

Dunno if this helps. Not exactly GTI6, but you'll see what I am saying. The catchtanks usually have an in and an out, to allow the gases to circulate, creating no pressure.

Not the best way to have the catch tank on picture one, I;ve seen a few of these and convereted them back to the std config as it doesn;t work and ends up filling the catch tank and loads of Mayo in the system, Dreamweaver's old car was like that

AS said spiky

almost exact same as euans,

i use a fiesta RST one

it basiaclly replicates the Standard system, but without breathing it into the inlet.

breathes from cam cover and block, and also has a return to sump.

any excuse for a picture, even though you cant see anyhting

except a dirty engine bay lol

(yes i know the socks are bad, they are going soon! lol)

the tiny small pipe is just blocked off.

It came with the car mate so not sure what its like inside.

If i were you I would run a bailey cossie breather and breathe from cam and block then retuen to sump as you would on a YB.

i was just going to put a breather filter on the left hand outlet and vent to atmosphere?

not a good idea?

you might be ok pete?

I really depends on how much your engine breathes.

I always run the pipes into bottles first with no catch tank/ breather to actually see how much oil comes out and to see if its worth seperating and then returning to the sump.

I did alot of work on the breather on my cossie so I know whats good and whats not.

Yeah, I'm interested too, because my mind's telling me that surely that's the best place for the mayo; in the catch tank.

Could you propose your/another way, perhaps with a diagram as I'm happy to change mine if there's something better.

All I do and have ever done is just taken the breather into the recirc part of the induction into a breather tank on both Mi16 and GTi6 and the tank hardly ever fills up with anything,

On a 8v rally car I;ve got at the moment thou the oil filler tower has been replaced by a custom header tank/catch tank with all the pipes going to it inc the main oil filler pipe so you also add the oil in it, It seems to work as the main problem with the cam cover breather's and namely the 8v's throw allot of oil thru this pipe so it needs draining into the sump ASAP

I guess I have a very similar setup as your 8V for my tbs Mi.

most hoses remain and a breather filter added to allow releasing pressure.

after looking at the original 8v and 16v oil filler tower(#2) (they are the same) and the filler plug (#1), I may switch back to the original filler tower and the Mi plug with 2 breather filters installed to ensure a rapid vapour and pressure release. will you guys think this will be a better setup. or have the header breather hose "T" to one of the hole of the Mi filler plug.

I haven’t got around to putting a pipe on my engine and have been driving it enthusiastically and 2 rolling road power runs without anything coming out of it yet. I will put something on it soon though
