Motorbike Can As Backbox On An Mi16?

Recommended Posts

trialster

hey guys, i've been sortin my car out slowly but surely and have now come to the exhaust ;)

the back box and part of the middle section definitely need replacing. so i'm probarbly going to get a new standard middle box and a new backbox, but which?

been looking at motorbike can's as an alternative to the usual magnex or powerflow box.

anyone had any experience with going down this route? was thinking maybe an R1 or Busa can.

I presume you mean aftermarket bike can?

A road legal can will be very quiet and probably quite heavy.

An aftermarket can will be very loud! lol

not really sure tbh. i've found one locally which comes off a 1300 R1. its 20 quid and i can weld so it shouldn't be too hard to fit. can't really go wrong tbh.

i thought i'd explore the possibilities as i haven't seen it done before.

A modern bike revs at 12000+ RPM or something silly, therefore would it not be inefficient for an Mi16 that revs to around half that?

And what of cost? I'm sure that the pipes on an R1 are not cheap!

The proof would be on the rolling road although I think it would be a fruitless pursuit.

I'm not knocking it Will, have you seen it applied on any other cars?

my thinking is that if you find a 1litre motorbike exhaust designed for an engine which rev's up to 12k and use it for a 2 ltr engine which can rev to half that at 6k, it would be suitable. i know there is more to it than that, but it seems pretty logical to me.

shall report back with pics and a review when done :)

Busa is 1300, if your using R1 then 1000 like welshpug said.

Power would be a better guestimate than engine size. The latest R1's are circa 180bhp so that logic would make it suitable for an Mi but earlier ones are less. I also think the later ones are Titanium. Would be worthwhile making sure you can weld it to whatever.

im thinking bout doing this but as far as i was concerned most standard bike back boxes have the cat built in to them so a aftermarket 1 would be better..

just look at the bore size. If its the same as the rest of the system or bigger then theres really no problem.

A lot of standard cans wont be straight through though, there will be chambers, more than likely linked by smaller diameter pipes than the inlet/outlet.

Two friends of mine run a bike repair shop and both fitted bike exhausts to their cars. One of made made a full titanium exhaust for his 1.6 CRX including exhaust manifold and dual back boxes. The other just used an aftermarket titanium backbox on his 2 litre manta. Both of them got noticeable improvements in performance.

Bike backboxes have gas accelerators and in effect are less restrictive. A lot of engineering goes into speed bikes so you really can't go wrong with mods from bikes.

220bhp from a turbocharged 1300cc Mini engine, revs to 9200rpm, we use a pair of Micron bike cans, they are 2" bore, weigh knob all. One is a middle box, the second is a back box which is removeable to swap for a straight piece of pipe. 92dB when noise tested. A good solution IMO and cheap too if you get the non-e-marked race cans as the bikers aren't allowed to use them on the road anymore.

ok, so i picked the can up last night and started to take it apart, removing some of the baffling and pipework from inside.

then after work today welded up a whole new exhaust for it. i've decided to have a straight through exhaust of 2.5" up to the yamaha back box.

i'll get pics of it all tomorow and a bit of a review of how it sounds/performs, but after a quick drive i can say it's a fair bit louder than a standard system, however power doesn't seem to be compromised.

pics on sunday
