Low Oil Pressure

Recommended Posts

driversdomainuk

Hi

Engine: Mi16 with carbs, used for motorsport use...making 167 bhp.

I have been having oil pressure probs. Had bottom end rebuilt as the crank turned out to be bent and the bearings had odd wear on them. Ok so after new crank and bearings I still had an oil pressure problem...

We looked at the cams and found these were badly worn and also the cam caps could actually be moved in situ. We (well others with a far superior mechanical knowledge) suggested this could also be causing low oil pressure.

Anyway I have a nice new conditioned head now which I am fitting tonight. Hopefully we should have oil pressure too...(was 2 psi at idle before)

Has anyone else had this dual problem..? should also restore lost power...? as 167 bhp with carbs on an MI is not good..?

If I am still having low pressure after this god forbid!!! any ideas what it could be...???

Cheers

Rob

Presume oil pump was checked/renewed when bottom end done??????

Could be pressure release piston stuck/sticking in oil pump ;)

If the condition and pressure from the pump is know to be good surley it can only be a blocked gallery or pick up?

I'm taking it the coolant system wasn't mixing and pressurizing?

No it can be what I suggested, this was coming from someone who is a professional engine builder and is an expert in 205s.

The coolant system was not pressurising either..

Was it a OE pump or pattern one? the latter are known to be bad for failing at very low milages

It was an FAI one cost £80. It had done zero miles after install. We measured oil pressure by getting it warm on the ramps. After 10 mins at idle the gloom began as I saw the PSI go from 60 to 40 to 30 to 20 to 10 to around 0 nooooooo!!:)

Let me understand this right, the suggestion is a worn cam and worn followers can account for low oil pressure?

I would check the pump, as said I only use OE one's due to the importance it's not worth saving £30.00 for a low quality part which is more than likly re-branded.

I;ve even come across pattern pump's cized up.

How can the cam caps be moved if they are tight? sounds like they're warped or fitted incorrectly??

FAI is OE quality

god this post is getting complex!!

Look, my engine is showing low oil pressure and if after all this money is still showing low oil pressure, I will drive it until the engine blows, throw it away and buy a Westfield Megabusa....

There end of post....

FAI I've found is nowhere near O.E quality!

I would fit the old oil pump myself.

I think you find FAI are in general terms (an OE supplier) although the pump may be crap - I have not inspected it that much

I can't believe your 'expert' engine builder/mechanic suggested cams/caps after that reading of oil pressure dropping :)

Why would it go upto a decent oil pressure then drop like that if it was cams/caps???????

I would have said its faulty oil pump going by your oil pressure figures ;)

Just cause its new doesn't mean its not going to be faulty.

IMO if it was anything to do with head/cams/caps the oil pressure would have been low straight away, not gone up to a decent level then dropped like it did B)

Other option would be crank/bearings :P

Is the engine knocking at all??????

Hope you sort it,but whoever has built your engine/been telling you what to replace should cover some of the cost IMO ^_^

Low oil pressure indicated by standard 205 gauge?

Aftermarket mechanical gauge?

with the Stop light illuminated?
