Where Is All This Oil From?

Recommended Posts

Masekwm

A few months back I posted compression test results, showing a healthy compression but the engine was blowing a fine mist of oil from one cylinder whilst I did the test. Yesterday I decided to strip the head off and change the stem seals.

On removing the inlet I found this awful mess above the starter

The distributor O ring is old and knackered but that wouldn't leave such a mess would it? Underneath of the inlet is also covered in oil.

I'm very confused!

In my rather limited experience a fubared dizzy o ring tends to leak down the back of the block

So considering where all this oil is i can only guess that you have a breather pipe holed or split or maybe the oil filler hose

As above, and also looks like cam cover gasket has been leaking

Crap design oil filler/breather pipes look like the main part of it,hoses go very brittle and crack/split ;)

Cam cover gasket was replaced late last year, I should of cleaned the block when I did it!

I shall check the condition of hoses when I put it all back together then.

Id say its something to do with the oil filler pipe/oil filler pot.

By looking at the oil on the cylinder head I'd say the cam cover casket seal too.

I'd imagine if the breather hole was blocked on the cover or the pipe connected to it was blocked, it could cause pressure to build up causing the seal to blow.

Worth checking I suppose.

I've got the head off now, and it looks like the oil was coming from a badly sealed gasket?
