Electric Power Steering

I need power steering on my S16 205 Rally car, its got a ZF plated diff. It runs without power steering at the mo and its not suitable for the track, very snachy coming out of the corners on full power.

 

My options are:-

run standard 205 power steering? pros easy to get hold off & quite light. Cons looses engine power from the pump, dont like more belts etc, more to go wrong

run a 205 PAS rack & run a saxo electric pump? pros does'nt loose engine power Cons pump very heavy & need to get a pressure pipe made up.

try find a electric motor style 205 rack like off a modern Swift or corsa? pros if it fails its still drivable Cons expensive & no know conversions.

 

I like the electric power rack option, does anyone know where I can get one from or make 1?

Where does the energy for the PAS come from if not from the engine?

 

Conservation of energy :blush:

 

Either method with still be driveable if the pump fails!

 

Go for the standard 205 PAS, it'll be lighter and easier to fit as all the parts / mounts are already there.

I went the saxo electric pump route - fitted it just behind rear axle - opposite drivers side. It might be heavy (7kg) - but u choose where to put it for best weight distribution! ;-)

 

Any good workshop kan make the hoses - just get original saxo ones and reuse the connectors....

 

wiring is dead easy to - good luck on it

Thanks for the replies.

 

I'll rephrase my question, has anyone or know anyone who has fitted a 205 with a electric power steering columb? I am not interested in hydrolic power steering, thanks.

Yes searched for ages mate, im piecing together bits of information so far that a corsa B power columb is a good starting point & make it fit. So looking into this route. I did speak to a company the other day and quoted me £750 to supply only a kit to convert a 205 columb, a tad bit pricey lol.

Next job is finding a column cheap. Since the Escort drivers started using these for the Mk1's and Mk2's, the prices have gone through the roof. You used to be able to pick these up at around £70, now you rarely see them for under £120

I fitted a saxo pump to the battery tray and made the pipes up out of old bits of std pug hoses I had kicking around

works ok. Totally agree with a Tran X in mine (road rally car) without PAS it was a nightmare, snatches like mad, I reckon if you had you thumbs in the wrong place and had one hand on thw wheel it could break your thumb! Works ok now, tho not so much PAS as the std 8v pump in the 309 I had (and I'm using the 309 rack int he 205 now)

 

I mounted it on the battery tray but down and back in the interests of weight distribution. I contemplated running it inside the car but the extra weight of hose and coolant outweigh thw advantages I felt.

 

Also the PAS looses efficiency when hot, so I have plans afoot to run a std 1900 oil/air cooler in the PAS circuit to keep it cool. Was very noticable on the 309 after very tight sections the PAS would loose some assisance with the heat

sorry this is going a bit off topic andy, but phil did you keep the cooling loop under the car? i used the oe low pressure side when i installed mine and the only issue i've had with mine is blowing the occaisional fuse.

no I didn't keep the cooling loop under the car Tom. I'm guessing you have a saxo pump in already, if so how much assistance does you'rs give compared to a std mech set up?
