Misfire 205 1.9

Recommended Posts

floodys

hi, reading through some of the posts about misfire, i have this on the 1.9, i did water pump and cam belt, have changed plugs and cap and rotor, the car has a misfire around 2-3k, a mate of mine mentioned the ig amp of which i changed for a bosch one i had (dont know condition but looked clean and newish!!) i'm yet to get a new set of leads so hopefully its this, one thing i wanted to know is about the thermal paste between ig amp and ally plate, do's it need it and what do's it do!! also, one of the bolts holding amp on is stripped so only 1 bolt holding in effect!!

p.s one last thing, i have bosch super 4's in and some people have mentioned that NGK plugs are better/ may get rid of misfire. your thoughts please.

p.p.s, i've adjusted timing back and forth in case its this but still same when retarded and advanced!!

The amp needs the paste to effectively transfer heat to the ally plate its bolted to, without it contact is poor and so the heat transfer is poor, which cooks the amp. The fact its only held on with 1 screw means the contact is almost non existant...

Get some paste from a PC repair shop/PC world etc... its like 30p a sachet.

Also get some longer screws/bolts that will protude through the back of the plate so you can get some nuts on them as well

This should be your first point of call but I dont think its the cause of your problem. You said you done plugs but havent mentioned leads? might be worth trying another known good coil as well. Also check for moisture sitting in the plug holes in the head.

Also what make distributer have you got?, im told duceller ones *can* be fussy with bosch amps and visa versa.

With all this said I had a simular problem lately (but at 4-5k) that would slightly improve with advance that turned out to be a knackered dizzy. I took it out and there was half inch of play in the shaft! suprised it worked at all!

NGK plugs all the way in any 205 I work on as recommended to me by a local garage. I removed some Bosch ones from a friends 205 that had a porr idle & without doing anything else it improved no end with someNGK's instead.

Don't know why but Pug's just seem to work better on NGK's imo.

Graham.

My ignition amp only has one screw remaining, the other side has been temporarily bodged with a cable tie for well over a year now! ;) Still works though! And the Paste is definitely needed, i once had an 205 Mi that wouldnt start at all, i went through everything trying to figure out why then thought "Whats this little tube of paste all about?", smeared it on and she was fine, won't make that mistake again!

When it comes to spark plugs though, i changed my Mi from NGKs to Bosch Super 4s (yes, the opposite of what everyone says to do!) and it made a noticable difference, especially to the idle, always recommend Super 4s to everyone now! You'd think i was on commission, i have used them in Honda Vtecs through to Clio Cups, always with a good response. Just my humble opinion!

Sam
