Painting Advice

Recommended Posts

ALEX

After reading a Goodwood wheel topic someone mentioned the colour is the same as Rover Steel grey.

My refurbed goodwood style alloys must have been refurbed using a darker grey as Rover Steel grey looked too light.

So I've bought Rover Gunmetal Grey instead, which still looks a little lighter than my wheels but near enough for the centre caps.

Could someone advise me on how to paint the centre caps, I tried spraying it straight on, but it looked like the paint didn't want to stick.

Keying the surface isn't going to be easy because of the raised lion logo on them, but is there some kind of plastic primer available that would help?

You have to key the surphace with some 500/800 (Id use 800 if they arnt flakey and in ok condition) grit before you start, regardless if you use primer or not (which you have to!)

Plastic primers are avaible from halfrauds.

Key

Clean (panel wipe is best, or give them a good scrub with a toothbrush and some fairy liquid, make sure they are rinsed and bone dry)

Prime

Dry

Colour

tbh mate if they are flaky and you are goign to prime thme then you could use a 320 grit? but if tehy are not use a scotch to key them

i dnt know if halfrauds sell them but any good paint suppliers would and on the primers for centre caps id just use any high build primer ratte can primer but for larger repaires you can get a special plastic primers you just dust coat on befor you high build them if that makes sense
