Is My Head Scrap?

Recommended Posts

Just been stripping down my XSI head and found this:

It's pretty nasty on the cam but not so bad in the head. What damage would be caused if I ran it like that? Can it be repaired? I probably won't use the cam, what would happen if I ran a new cam in there?

Difficult to tell from pics, but it might be honeable.

Cheers  What would make it 'unhoneable', how bad would it need to be?

If it goes oversize before a decent surface is achieved.

So it's worth giving honing a go then, if its scrap its scrap either way!

Sandy- I've got this problem with my gti-6 head, although I've also got pick-up in the lifter bores too. Somehow, 3 of the snap clips in the lifters on the inlet have broken and worked there way out  Have you ever seen this happen before?

It's definitely worth a go Adam!

Oli, you can do the same on the 6 head and possibly the lifter bores, although lifter damage invariably means scrap on these. I've known various lifter issues on the 6, but not that one until now! Unless it's a head that's had good porting etc invested in it, I would consider getting a tidier one. If it was a customer engine I would unless the head was particularly valuable.
