standard dampers, which IIRC are part number 5206 K6

Standard genuine 306 GTi-6 dampers work well and are cheap, or Bilstein Sprintline/Sport (yellow) dampers work well and aren't too expensive.

As you've correctly identified, avoid the Bilstein Streetline/"OE" (black) rear dampers as they're woefully underdamped...

if your on a budget try some 306 gti6 ones, I've been running a second hand set on mine for a while and really rate them

spoke to rob from autofive he says he can do the bilstein rears from the sprintline kit as seperate items. he says prices are going to be revised so not sure how much they come out at. who make the standard oe gti6 rears ?

Peugeot. From memory, they're about £35 each new, and that's for genuine OE parts from the dealer.

the Bilstein ones used to be around the £96, EACH.

wouldn't be the best choice for standard torsion bars IMO.

The Sprint/Sport ones are fine for standard TB's in my experience, as are the softer Group N ones (Gravel/Forest?).

Group N Tarmac and the Challenge spec dampers are a bit OTT for standard TB's on the road though

would there be any problems with having sprint/sport dampers on rear and bilstein oe (streetline spec) on front, fronts were fitted by previous owner along with apex -30mm springs. i had rear beam refurbed at skip browns about 18 months ago with group n rear beam mounts fitted.

So Welshpug are you saying that the 306 gti6 and 205 1.9gti use the same rear dampers?

Seems a bit wierd that people go on about how good the 306 ones are if they are the same part..

They are the same part number these days, but they're not the same, certainly weren't from std and are visibly different too. What i suspect id that they're dropped the 205 ones and just use the same part number for the Gti6 ones...

They haven't always been listed the same. They've changed recently I think! I checked just now on servicebox and they are listed as for XU9JA engines 205s from a certain chassis number and are priced at £45.34 each including VAT.

I have 306 2.0 rear dampers (the genuine pug "K6" part number, same for XSi, S16 and GTi-6 etc.) and I think they are perfect for standard beam. I think it is the quality of the bushes that makes them quite comfortable with nice stiff bound damping to give sharp high speed handling. Often so callled uprated sport dampers have poly bushes and quite weak bound damping, designed for stiffer bars and not ideal for the road in my opinion. And poly bushes in rear dampers won't last long either, my AVO adjustables are crap!

Up front I have yellow bilsteins - stiff but great! I never liked the oe (black/streetline) bilsteins, even the fronts. The ones I had on the 306 had a solid top-out that clunked loudly. I didn't like the damping very much either, bit I never tried them on the 205. As everyone says, don't get black oe bilstein rears - unless you want a back end like a trampoline!

I hear people talking about gravel spec or tarmac spec bilsteins, group N etc. Does anyone know if my "B6" struts are gravel or tarmac spec, or is that just for coil-overs? Are the inserts the same?

As an alternative choice, I have KYB AGX adjustables and I find them spot on.

They're £37 + vat for rears.

I used to have some Koni yellow adjustables on mine (still got them on the front) & they were harsher than the Bilstein group N tarmac shocks I replaced them with when one sprung a leak but I've driven other 205's with the same Koni shocks & they were much more compliant.

If you are at all worried about ride comfort then get the K6's from Peugeot.

Graham.

Has anyone tried the KYB AGX front adjustables? I noticed buypartsby.com sell them quite cheap.

On the rear I liked the AVO adjustables I used to have, as they seemed to have a big range from soft to pretty hard.
