8v Manifold Studs

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Got a suspected leak on my exhaust manifold, dodgy gasket I think. Anyhoo my plan next week is to remove the manifold and renew gaskets, also renew studs and bolts, here lies the problem. The servicebox image shows 2 types of stud and I cant fathom which to use! Currently there are all sorts of bolts holding it on and also no studs on top to mount the air box. The image is below. Can anyone help and also any advice before i start.

Was your car made before or after 1st April 1991?

They are both the same thread so it shouldn't matter which one you use imo.

The airbox is usually bolted to the manifold iirc not on a stud.

Graham.

I replaced the studs for the exhaust manifold, the ones I got were different to the ones fitted. The part of the stud that isn't threaded was larger on the new studs, this is fine if your using a standard manifold, but if your using a 4 branch you'll have to stick a washer/spacer on each stud as it won't bolt the manifold down properly.

Is the difference in the length of the unthreaded bit of the stud down to the thickness of the manifold mating face? Were the later manifolds slightly different?

The reason I ask is I need to replace my manifold with one i've got lying around, but i'm not sure of its age.

Manifolds are the same, it's the stud length that varies and I would guess the later one also fit's the XU10 engines too,

I use normal Copper nut's as there cheaper and better than the Pug one's

I got my studs and copper nut from pug yesterday and it all fitted fine. A quick peice of info though. The studs don't fit into the top airbox mounting holes which just goes to show that even their own drawings aren't right sometimes!
