R1 Carbs Leaking

Recommended Posts

M_R_205

after a little drive today i noticed that the carbs were leaking petrol out of the venturi`s and into the engine bay, i have the fuel presssure set at about 2.8psi and the float levels were set by the bogg brothers when it was setup last year, it may have been leaking since then though i dont know,

Does anyone have any suggestions o, what to check next?

Paul

What jets are you using? You might want to whip the float bowl lids off and check all the jets are securely in, also check the needles are all aligned. Also check the floats still open and close with change in level as they should.

Just a thought

Rite iv been fidling with the carbs all day and iv located the exact location of the leak, under the venturi there is 2 brass "thingy`s" lol! qny way the fuel is spitting out of them, only a tiny bit at a time,

Any ideas how to cure this??

the fact that all of them are leaking suggests to me that it's something which is common to all carbs - the fuel pressure. i'd drop the fuel pressure a tiny bit and see what effect it has

I have just lowered the fuel pressure to 2psi and it is still leaking, it seems to leak considerably more from the far right carb, and hardly anything from the two left hand carbs...

When i get home from work i might pull them apart and see if there is somthing loose, im just worried incase i bugger them lol!!

I've found the carbs to be very sensitive to float levels, and in a 205 they are runniing at a very different angle to what they were designed for - this means that if the float levels were set up on the bench they will probably be wrong. A trick that my rolling road guy tried was to blow into the carb mouth (engine not running !) and observe if fuel emerges from main jet easily - if so the float level is probably too high and will overflow into the drain ports.

So the brass parts that i have highlighted are the drain ports, how do i adjust the float levels?

I think i got this sorted today,

i pulled off the float chamber caps, pulled the floats out with the fuel cut off pins to reveal a large amont of sediment down the hole that they should slide into and the piins bunged up with sediment, i cleand this all out and the rest of the float chamber, bent the little metal tab on the float upwards to lower the float level and then put everything back together again,

bingo its seems `touch wood` to have fixed the problem!

Next step considering the sediment would be replacing the fuel filter...

Bugger me thay have decided to start leaking again so i have just checked the float levels against the overflow nozzles and the results are......

So my question now is how do i adjust the float level properly, last time i just bent the metal tab on the centre of the float but i dont think this is the correct way for some reason.

The old guy at work recons the brass chamber that the fuel cut off sits in can be adsjusted out by shiming it, is this the case or is there some other way??

Cheers

Paul.

P.S fitted a new fuel filter too :)

For the last week I have been looking to find the guide online that told me to plug up the holes that you speak of.

I remember talk of superglue.

Was I drunk or dreaming?

I have not done it however, I think it was the vauxhall site I found it. ?????????????????????
