Lower Engine Mount - Does It Matter Which Way Round It Is?

Recommended Posts

Masekwm

I fitted new engine mounts in October 2008, not uprated ones just ones from ECP. I've had a constant sort of kangerooing and I still have a fair amount of movement from the engine.

When the lower mount was pressed in, the guy who did it couldn't remember which way the old mount was. So just pressed the mount in as shown below...

Now we pressed it in so the rubber which sit against the metal are horizontal thinking it takes the pressure of the engine attempting to move.

Last night I decided to remove the fork from the car to change it's bush but suddenly realised that the pressure from that on the lower mount is vertical.

With a lever on the fork there was a fair amount of movement so I'm going to change the bush anyway.

So the question is, should my mount be the other way round or doesn't it matter.

I've packed out the top mount but shall be changing that as recommended by another forum member. I guess I'll end up changing them all again!

the forces on that mounting are on the horizontal plane not vertical.

regardless of its positioning if its not very old your kangarooing is caused by something else, if your car has an AFM and throttle switch, it could be these worn or badly setup.

Thank you, that puts my mind at ease with regards to that bush.

It's not the normal 205 kangerooing, the engine still has some movement in it which causes the juddering. I can't describe it properly

Thats is where a lot of the play was coming from, the selflocking nut hadn't locked itself and slid up the spline, so I've got to pick up another at the weekend.

I've ordered a replacement bush from BBM for the fork as Peugeot were helpful as ever, spoke to a local garage...

"I've got the part off the car and just need the bush pressing in"

"Right, so you've already removed the mount from the car"

"I have, it's simply press out old, press in new. I just need an idea on how much that would be"

"You are looking at 90 minutes of labour, about £80+VAT"

Just to add I asked this very question here:

I went an bought a xantia mount as a result of the above and will be mounting it as yours is currently, to reduce the rock in the engine.

It's still waiting to be fitted, was that really 2 years ago!!!???

Many thanks for the offer Tom, I'd found another local garage who did it this morning for a few pints.

Very kind of you to offer though
